L/Cpl. George McDonald, S/7765, Royal Highlanders/Black Watch, 8th Bn. K.I.A. 25.09.1915.

War Return from S.P. lists details as above

SNWM lists exactly the same but with the additional info that his birthplace was Scone.

Can't find him on CWGC under Mc or Mac Donald.

Or using S/7765 or 7765 on Geoff's search engine. As a death in service, perhaps Jim (kinnethmont) will be able to find out whether he has been flagged up by the IFTC project.

Best wishes,

Stuart

Thanks Mark,

Slap on the wrist for me for not paying attention!!

I noticed on reading through the thread that a War Return Death' is not acceptable and that affirmation from GRO would be required?

I though GROS certificates were 'beyond' question almost? Or maybe it's because of that wee 'S' tagged on at the end Laughing

Anne

The Army Service Return which lists the casualties is not a Death Certificate. GROS will provide a DC Extract from the information, it is the Official document.

The Service Return can be acceptable depending on the circumstances, provided it is clear and fully legible. It is always best to have other evidence in support of it, though.

In McDonald's case the Death Certificate is required as he is being proposed as a CWGC non comm ( in service death).
As explained by Mark, his case is currently with CWGC / MOD and the DC has been sourced to add to the other evidence we gathered. The arrangement IFCP have with MOD means that all death certificates are obtained from GRO. ( No S )

I could easily have obtained a DC from GROS, but at a cost to me personally. That is the only difference the S makes.
