Thomas R Milne of the Lanarkshire Yeomanry is listed on both of the memorials in Dalry (Kirkcudbrightshire). The Stewartry Roll of Honour states only that he was from Dalry.

I cannot be sure I have identified him, CWGC has only one T R Milne but second initial is not always shown. The man I have found is:

Name: MILNE
Initials: T R
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Royal Scots Fusiliers
Unit Text: 12th Bn.
Age: 34
Date of Death: 06/05/1917
Service No: 295938
Additional information: Son of David Stephen Milne, of Pitfour, Mintlaw, Aberdeenshire; husband of Janet Milne, of Coltness Mains, Wishaw, Lanarkshire.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: A. 166.
Cemetery: DEIR EL BELAH WAR CEMETERY

and SNWM adds:
Surname MILNE
Firstname Thomas R
Service Number 295938
Date Death 06/05/1917
Decoration
Place of birth South Shields
Other 12th Bn.
SNWM roll THE ROYAL SCOTS FUSILIERS
Rank Pte
Theatre of death Palestine.

Nothing of interest on his MIC

SDGW from Ancestry gives:
Name: Thomas R. Milne
Birth Place: South Shields
Residence: Dumfries
Death Date: 6 May 1917
Enlistment Location: Dalry, Ayrshire
Rank: Private
Regiment: Royal Scots Fusiliers
Battalion: 12th Battalion.
Number: 295938
Type of Casualty: Died of wounds
Theatre of War: Austria

Cannot find him in the 1901 census.

Can anyone help clarify if this man was killed in Austria or Palestine and was he born in South Shields, Dalry Ayrshire or even Dalry Kirkcudbrightshire? And importantly, is he my man from the memorial?

\Paul

Pitfour is a farm near Methlick. He is not listed on the Methlick War Memorial.

Date of death fits with the (unusually very) brief report in the Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser, 25th May 1917:
Private Milne, Lanarkshire Yeomanry, gamekeeper to Mr Forbes at Earlston, Dalry, leaves a widow and six children.

Named in a casualty list in The Scotsman, 11th June 1917, p7 as died of wounds:
Milne, 295938, T. (Wishaw)

I would say definitely the St. John's Town of Dalry man. The 12th RSF is the most likely infantry battalion for a former Lanarkshire Yeoman. SDGW is riddled with errors and the Ancestry version just makes a poor situation worse.

Roll of Honour for Wishaw and Cambusnethan has the following:

Wishaw Beyond Burgh (including Wishaw and Coltness Estates):

*Milne, Thomas Rankin, Coltness Mains, Lanarkshire Yeomanry. Married.

The * indicates that he was killed or died.

There is a Thomas Milne listed under "Newmains District" on the memorial at Newmains.

Hi Aimee, welcome to the forum.

I live in Dalry (St Johns Town of Dalry to give it its 'Sunday' name), and just about a mile from Earlston.

When I made the original postings, I was trying to identify all the men on local memorials and, together with Ken Morrison, all of the information is now posted at http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=542 and he his also listed on the memorial at http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?p=5497 and in the roll of honour at http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=8810 and in the Stewartry Roll of Honour (I have a copy).

Although it is possible that others (Perhaps Ken Morrison or 'Stewartry' may make other use of this information in the future, there are no other plans at present other than to honour those who died via this forum, plus I arrange for publication of the WW1 deaths in the Glenkens Gazette on the centenary of their death.

I am afraid that is the extent of our knowledge at the moment but if you have anything to add, then we would be most grateful for it, particularly for any photographs.

Meanwhile, if you would like any local photographs around Dalry for your family archives, please don't hesitate to ask.

I have posted this here rather than replying to your PM as I feel that others may be interested in the story of Thomas Milne.

Regards

Paul

Hi Aimee
Here's what I've been able to find
The CWGC Register has:
MILNE, T. R. - Private 295938, 12th Bn. Royal Scots Fusiliers
Age: 34 - Date of Death: 06/05/1917 [born c. 1883}
Son of David Stephen Milne, of Pitfour, Mintlaw, Aberdeenshire;
husband of Janet Milne, of Coltness Mains, Wishaw, Lanarkshire.

Soldiers who Died in the Great War (SDGW) has:
Born - South Shields. Resident - Dalry, Ayrshire. Enlisted – Dumfries.

Thomas Rankin Milne was born in the April/May/June quarter of 1883 in the South Shields Registration District in County Durham. [this includes the civil parish of Hebburn]
Volume 10a page 800

Note: another Thomas Rankin Milne was born in the December quarter of 1885 also in South Shields. Volume 10a page 752
This appears to be the son of James and Elsie Hall Milne and this family were still in Hebburn in 1911
.

In 1891 at Fetterangus, Old Deer, Aberdeenshire were
David S Milne 51. born New Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire (a joiner)
Elizabeth Milne 34, born Longside, Aberdeenshire
Thomas R. Milne 8, born Durham Hebburn
Mary Ann 6 & Elizabeth 5, both born Fetterangus.

David Stephen Milne had married Elizabeth Dickie in the March quarter of 1883 in South Shields.

Thomas R. Milne married Janet Smith in 1907 in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire.

This aligns with David McNay's information from the Roll of Honour for Wishaw and Cambusnethan - Wishaw Beyond Burgh (including Wishaw and Coltness Estates):
*Milne, Thomas Rankin, Coltness Mains, Lanarkshire Yeomanry. Married.

In 1911 at Dalry, Kirkcudbrightshire were:
Thomas R Milne 28, Janet 35, David 2 and William 0
and the 1915 Valuation Roll shows Thomas Milne as the inhabitant of Barlae House, Dalry, Kirkcudbrightshire.

It look as though Thomas enlisted in 1916 and, given his age and the size of his family, he may well have been conscripted (drafted)
According to the Army Registers of Soldiers effects, payments were made to his wife Janet and children and I would guess they returned to Janet's family in Wishaw after Thomas's death.

All of the Scottish Birth, Marriage, Death and Census pages are downloadable from http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
Any English certificates (South Shields) have to be ordered and you need to quote the Volume and Page numbers.
https://www.gov.uk/order-copy-birth-death-marriage-certificate

I hope this helps.
