Glenbarr (Killean & Kilchenzie Parish)
Argyll & Bute, Kintyre District

Location: On eastern verge of A83 just north of Glenbarr

The Glenbarr war memorial is a rustic pedestal set on a tapering base of local stone and supporting a stepped column and roughly hewn stone cross. The memorial is approached through a gateway flanked by two domed rustic pillars of identical construction to the pedestal, and the commemoration and names of the dead are carved on slate panels set into the face of the pedestal and base.

UKNIWM ref no: not listed
OS map ref: NR670370

This is a spectacular memorial that has recently been tidied up. It stands 75m above sea level and can be seen from a long way off. It must stand at least 30 feet tall.

Just starting to have a look at the Argyll & Bute War Memorial List, an area of which I have no particular knowledge.

This memorial is listed as Glenbarr but the memorial states "TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH". I think this memorial is the Killean & Kilchenzie Parish Memorial, Glenbarr being only a hamlet or village within the parish itself.

Updates on this and others in the area to follow.

Mark

It should be changed to the parish name as you suggest. UKNIWM correctly lists it as:

Parish of Killean and Kilchenzie
UKNIWM Ref: 57696

From The Scotsman, 01 August 1922

    WAR MEMORIALS

KINTYRE.—A memorial to 22 men of the parishes of Killean and Kilchenzie, was unveiled at Glenbarr. The monument is in the form of a cairn surmounted by a cross, and was designed by Mr Alexander N Paterson A.R.S.A., Glasgow. The unveiling was performed by Sergeant Edward MacDonald, D.C.M., late 8th Argylls, and Mrs Archibald Galbraith, who lost two sons in the war, placed the paish wreath at the base. His Grace the Archbishop of York gave the address. The Archbishop said that he had taken part in the dedication of some 200 war memorials, but none of these had appealed more strongly to his heart than this Kintyre one, as for 28 years he had spent all of part of his rest time in the district in Largie Castle.

Looks like Mrs Galbraith lost her two sons in less than three weeks of one another.
