Those of you who have access to Scotlands People, and who have searched online for a military death, will probably be aware of the format of the death returns.

In most cases, it is a sheet which will contain the basic details of death for about 15 or so names for a specific regiment or unit.

These sheets of information may contain extra details not found n the CWGC or SDGW. They can include a specific place of death (usually a village/town name or sometimes a hospital) or cause of death (usually killed in action or died of wounds but sometimes more detailed like the type of wound inflicted)

Because each sheet has a number of names in it, we have decided to keep a spreadsheet of the details for all the men in the certificates we have listed. In this thread we will publish the names of the men we have indexed. We will provide the rest of the details on request. Please note that the index we publish here is a fraction of the names available on the registers held in Edinburgh. We are only listing the ones we have paid for and downloaded ourselves. The list will include military deaths from both World Wars and also pre-WW1. The Boer War service deaths are compiled in a different format and will not be available - we are working on a separate project for Boer War Scottish deaths.

We are also interested in any copies of pages of death returns you may yourself have downloaded from Scotlands People. The information on these may be of interest to others and will help us to build the spreadsheet further.

Please restrict all requests for lookups to this thread - the spreadsheet is being compiled by anne Anderson, and while others have a copy of the spreadsheet, none of us will respond to requests by Private Message - all correspondance must remain in this thread. This will also enable the information to be made available to all.

Hi

Is it possible to look at the report for Robert Simpson, I am trying to trace my Grandfather's father of the same and ma wonderinf if this is him. All I know is that he died before my Grandfather was married in 1917.

thanks

Robert Simpson

There are a great number of men with this name, including some simply R Simpson which could be him. You will need to give more specific info about your gt grandfather to narrow the search down and possibly identify him. Which service was he in, the date of your grandfather's marriage, where did he live / work, etc. If a family member has his medals they will give his name, unit and number.
