While investigatin Louis Lurinsky, who was killed in 1914, I came across the following CWGC entry:

Name: LURINSKY, JOHN
Initials: J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Unit Text: 1st Bn.
Date of Death: 08/05/1918
Service No: 22963
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 68 to 70 and 162 and 162A.
Memorial: TYNE COT MEMORIAL

Out of curiosity I downloaded his death certificate, and he is listed as James, not John Lurinsky.

Even more curiously, he is listed as T Lurinskey on the SNWM:

Surname LURINSKEY
Firstname T
Service Number 22963
Date Death 08/05/1918
Decoration
Place of birth
Other 1st Bn.
SNWM roll THE CAMERONIANS (SCOTTISH RIFLES)
Rank Pte
Theatre of death France.

His page lists a reference for a will, SC70/8/1279/11 which has the following information:

Will of 22963 Private or John Thomas Lewinsky, alias James Stewart, 1st Bn., Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), Cause of death: Unknown, France, Theatre: France., 08 May 1918

MIC has him as John T Lurinsky.

So he's either James Stewart or John Thomas. And he's either Lurinsky, Lurinskey or Lewinsky!

Do you think there is any way of determining which is his correct name?

Oh, and some kind soul possibly visit the NAS for me and request a copy of his will? That might shed some light on the matter.

What I did find though, was another possible error on the part of the CWGC, which I will detail elsewhere.

Not quite sure why this would have to be a CWGC error.

When checking out Lewis Lurinsky I too came upon John and wondered if they may be connected.

His name was returned as James Lurinsky although SDGW have him as John ( same as CWGC ) born St Giles, Edinburgh, e Leith, res Edinburgh. Lewis is born Dundee, res Edinburgh so certainly an Edinburgh link.

Searching for either spelling of the surname in 1901 gives a complete blank.

I suspect the christian name confusion stems for the alias details ( John Thomas Lewinsky, alias James Stewart ) and this may mean that the original DC was cancelled and re-issued as John. Certainly CWGC will record the details supplied to them.

It does appear they may be brothers if you compare the NOK info for Lewis (Son of Lewis and Elizabeth Lurinskey; husband of Margaret Lurinskey, of 50, Abercrombie St., Glasgow. ) and the details Suziebain has given.

Sadly, the NOK have not provided details of John / James.

The Will may well add more but might not reveal if the record was updated later
An e-mail with the reference to NAS will result in a reply with a cost. Call and pay by CC. Service usually pretty efficient
