Kilmaurs - Kilmarnock & Louden District
The Kilmaurs war memorial is a freestone obelisk standing on a series of four octagonal steps. The bronze memorial tablets are set into the stone pedestal faces which project out from the four sides. A bronze soldier, head bowed and arms reversed, by Glasgow sculptor Kellock Brown is set at the front of the monument (Brown executed the same figure for the Penpont memorial). The memorial stands on a rise in Morton Park.
The commemoration is carved on the stone shield at the base of the obelik. The carving is becoming eroded and reads:
IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL
REMEMBRANCE OF
THOSE FROM THIS
DISTRICT WHO DIED
FOR THEIR COUNTRY
IN THE GREAT WAR
1914 - 1918 - 1939 - 1945

Some added information from wikipedia (but I checked the facts with a local history book):
"Kilmaurs has a particularly fine war memorial situated in the Morton Park (gifted to the village by George Morton of Lochgreen, Troon in 1921.) The memorial itself was erected at a cost of £900 raised by public subscription and unveiled on 3 April 1921. 45 men gave their lives in the Great War and 10 men and 1 woman in the Second World War"
I agree, I think this is a magnificient memorial, a very effective sculpture and the placement of the memorial sets it off perfectly.
Here are some extra photos
I like the decision to give the woman killed in world war two a little extra prominence by including her at the top of the list. |

Graeme
I've seen this placing of a woman's name first on Great War panels, I don't think it was as common for the Second World War where they are more likely to be included alphabetically.
