Part one of two. A look at the role Scots played in the Spanish Civil War, using previously unseen archive interviews to tell the stories of those who participated between 1936 and 1939. Their contributions are also chronicled through the words of relatives and experts on the conflict, and footage of Spanish battlefields then and now.

I'm unsure when part two will be screened.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm at the Mitchell Library tonight, hopefully I'll be home in time to catch this.

A fascinating programme. Well worth watching if it's repeated.

It's also available online here:

Second and final part on tonight - don't miss it!

The book "Homage to Caledonia" by Daniel Gray, which "accompanies" this series is sold out of every bookshop in Glasgow. I've been trying to get a copy for days now...

I kept an eye on all the memorials mentioned and I think we have them all posted or listed.

Great program - I never knew much of this stuff.

'Real' Scottish history seems to be neglected.

Any amount of romanticised myth making about Bruce, Wallace, the Bonnie Prince, Burns and the like but precious little about Scotland's part in the slave trade, the Clearances, Scots mercenaries and missionaries, the Red Clydeside and the Spanish Civil War.

I suppose the truth doesn't sell shortbread Crying or Very sad

Didn't see this programme, but one of our local councillors of the 60s, fought in the International Brigade against Franco when he was a young man.

In the early 70s, he was honoured by Spain, knighting him as a Don of the Realm. His name? Donald Renton ... afterwards Don Don to us younger kids. He died not long after ... and a local sheltered housing complex was renamed Renton House not long ago to memorialise him.
