PRIVATE D. BARROWMAN, A&SH
David Barrowman, Private (S/10569) 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Age 20.
A former pupil of the Dalbeattie Higher Grade Public School, David was a milk tester with the Milk Record Society of the Lower District of Wigtownshire when he enlisted March in 1916. He went to France in July 1916.
Born 1897 at Buittle, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late Adam Barrowman and of Sarah (Sibbald) Barrowman of Meikle Culloch Dairy, Urr.
Missing in action on 24 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France Also named on the Dalbeattie War Memorial.


2nd LIEUT. K. BIGGAR, CAMERONS
Kenneth Biggar, Second Lieutenant: "A" Company, 6th Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. Age 21.
Kenneth was educated at Giggleswick School in Settle, Yorkshire and was training as an accountant in Glasgow when he enlisted as Private (12156) in the 5th Cameron Highlanders in September 1914. He was commissioned in the 6th Battalion in October and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915. He was killed at Hill 70 near Loos.
Born 1893 at Grange, Urr. Son of the late James Biggar and of Martha Margaret (Rawline) Biggar of Chapleton, Urr.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Giggleswick School memorial.


LIEUT. J. G. BIRNEY, HLI
John Gordon Birney, Lieutenant: 1st Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. Age 19.
John was the Laird of Redcastle Estate, in the parish of Urr. He was educated at Temple Grove School, at Winchester College from 1911 and at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst from April 1915 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the HLI in September 1915. He joined his battalion in March 1916 but was invalided to India. John returned in late 1916, was promoted on 1 January 1917 and was killed near Kut al Amara.
Born 1898 at Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Son of Sarah Duncuft (Worthington) Birney of Killarney, Culverden Down, Tunbridge Wells, Kent and of Sandes Soldier's Home, Meerut, India, and of the late Lieutenant John Ramsay Birney.
God-son of Colonel John Birney of Redcastle, Haugh of Urr.
Missing in action on 11 January 1917 and named on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.
Also named on an individual memorial in Urr Parish Church and on the Winchester College War Memorial.
With his death the Estate passed to his uncle Lt. Col. Charles Folliot Birney, DSO, R.E. whose own son David died at St. Nazaire in 1942 and who is also remembered on this memorial.


CAPTAIN P. A. BLAIR, R.SCOTS
Patrick Alexander Blair, Military Cross, Captain: 9th Battalion, Royal Scots. Age 37.
Patrick was educated at Sedbergh School in Yorkshire (now Cumbria) and was a student of law at Edinburgh University during 1900 -1. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1904 and became an accountant with Macandrew & Blair, Edinburgh. He was joint editor of The Accountants' Magazine for several years prior to the war. He was a Captain with the 9th Royal Scots Territorials from 1912 and landed with the battalion at Le Havre in February 1915. He was Mentioned in Despatches in 1915 and awarded the M.C. In 1917.
Born 1879 at St. George's, Edinburgh. Son of Alexander Blair (Sheriff of Edinburgh) and his wife Fairley (Kerr) Blair.
Killed in action on 23 April 1917 and buried in Level Crossing Cemetery, Fampoux, France,
Also named on the Springholm Village War Memorial, on the Sedbergh School Memorial and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.


LCE. CORP. R. BURGESS, CAMERONS
Robert Burgess, Lance Corporal (S/21990) 1st Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. Age 23.
Robert enlisted in January 1916 in the 7th Cameron Highlanders and served at Ypres and the Somme. He was wounded near High Wood. Robert was transferred to 1st Battalion and was killed near Givenchy.
Born 1895 at Kilberry, Ayrshire. Son of Ebenezer and Janet (McTaggart) Burgess of Hardgate, Urr and of the Square, Auchencairn, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Missing in Action on 20 April 1918 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

DRIVER C. DALRYMPLE, RA
Not listed by CWGC/SNWM
Charles Dalrymple, Gunner - either (72848) Royal Garrison Artillery or (99304) Royal Field Artillery, latterly (327105) Labour Corps. Age 43.
Born 1876 at Keir, Dumfriesshire. Son of Agnes Dalrymple.
Died on 2 March 1920 of TB at Little Kirkland, Urr and was buried in Keir Churhyard.
His death notice states "Died as the result of illness contracted on active service" but supporting evidence cannot be found.


PRIVATE J. DALZIEL, HLI
John Dalziel, Private (74157) 51st Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. Age 19.
John enlisted in June 1918 and at the end of the war served on garrison duty on the Rhine. He died of illness in the 83rd General Hospital, Langenfeld, Germany.
Born 1900 at Kirkpatrick Durham, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John and Martha Dalziel of Bush O'Bield, Haugh of Urr and of Walton Park, Dalbeattie.
Died on Service on 1 July 1919 and buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany.
The 51st (Young Soldiers) Battalion was essentialy a reserve battalion. It was moved from the UK to Worringen near Cologne to relieve the 2nd HLI who were stationed there.


PRIVATE R. L. DAVIDSON, WELCH R.
Robert Lennox Davidson, Private (2618) 9th Battalion, Welsh Regiment. Age 35.
Robert had been working in Argentina for about 10 years and, at outbreak of war, he returned home, landing at Liverpool on board the RMS Darro from Buenos Aires in October 1914 to rejoined his old regiment. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1880 at Kirkpatrick Durham, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Jane Davidson.
His sister and next-of-kin, Annie Davidson was living in Springholm, Urr. Missing in action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Springholm village War Memorial.

John Drysdale, Private (20224) 1st Battlion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 31.
Jack was a farm servant when he enlisted in June 1915. He joined his battalion at Gallipoli in September 1915 and then served in Egypt before moving with his battalion to France in March 1916.
Born 1885 at Balmaghie, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of William McConnel Drysdale abd Grace (Mont) Drysdale of Haugh of Urr.
Missing in action on 1 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


CORPORAL F. FARISH, BLACK WATCH
Francis Farish, Corporal (5172 & S/40362) 4th/5th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) Age 24.
Francis was working with father when he enlisted as Private (1929) in the 3/3rd Scottish Horse Yeomanry in November 1915. He was posted to the Black Watch in France in 1916 and was killed at Buzancy.
Born 1893 at Urr. Son of Andrew and Catherine (Cowper) Farish of Crofthead, Crocketford, Urr.
Missing in action on 28 July 1918 and named on the Soissons Memorial, France.


CWGC & SNWM spell the following surnames as Gallagher.
PRIVATE C. GALLACHER, KOSB
Charles McAlpine Gallacher, Private (42665) 14th Company, Machine Gun Corps. Age 18.
Charles was employed at Auchenreoch, Springholm, Urr when he enlisted as Private (2159) in the 1/5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 and was wounded there. He was evacuated back to the UK and was transferred to the MGC. Charles was killed while attached to the 1st Dorsetshire Regiment.
Born 1899 at William Street, Dalbeattie. Son of Peter Gallacher of Mill Street and of High Street, Dalbeattie and of Mary McAlpine.
Killed in action on 13 July 1917 and buried in Coxyde Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Dalbeattie and Springholm War Memorials.

The initial letter "P" is wrong on both this memorial and at Springholm.
Thomas Gallacher, Sergeant (12581) 7th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Age 20.
Thomas was employed at Little Milton, Springholm, Urr when he enlisted in September 1914. He joined his battalion in France on 5 August 1915.
Born c.1895 at Old Cumnock, Ayrshire. Son of Peter Gallacher of Mill Street and of High Street, Dalbeattie.
Missing in action on 26 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dalbeattie and Springholm War Memorials.
At the time of his death he had 3 brothers serving; Francis - 2nd KOSB, Peter - RFA and Charles - 1/5th KOSB.


PRIVATE R. GIBSON, CAMERONS
Robert Gibson, Private (S/16478) "A" Company, 7th Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. Age 25.
Robert was a son of William Gibson of Gibson and Dunn of Cadogan Street in Glasgow and the grandson of Robert Gibson of Little Cocklick in Urr Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. He had been a pupil of Dumfries Academy and was an assistant gas manager when he enlisted in December 1914. He went to France in August 1915. He was twice severely wounded; in November 1915 and in October 1916. Robert returned to France for the final time in February 1918.
Born 1892 at (Barony) Blackfriars, Glasgow. Son of the late Christina Margaret Gibson and of William Gibson of Woodlands Road and of Mansionhouse Road, Newlands, Glasgow.
Missing in action on 28 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial, on the Dumfries Academy Memorial, on the Glasgow Roll of Honour and on the Wellcroft Bowling Club Roll of Honour in Queen's Park, Glasgow.

Robert Gibson, Chief Engineer: Mercantile Marine. Age 45.
Born 1872 at Urr. Son of Robert Gibson of Cocklick, Urr.
After many years in the Merchant Navy (including War-time service) Robert took the post of Government Inspector at the Elswick Works in Newcastle (part of the Armstrong-Whitworth group of armament and munitions factories and ship-yards) He was killed by a motor waggon as he alighted from a tram.
Died on 18 February 1918 at Newcastle Royal Infirmary, buried in Urr Parish Churchyard.

2nd. LIEUT. H. M. GUTHRIE, LAN. FUS.
Hector McLennan Guthrie, Lieutenant: 3rd Battalion attached to the 1st Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. Age 22.
Hector was educated at Fordyce Academy and at Aberdeen University where graduated M.A. in July 1914. A sergeant in " U " (University) Company of the 4th Battalion Gordon Highlanders, he proceeded to Bedford for service with the Battalion in August 1914. He applied for and obtained a commission in the Lancashire Fusiliers in October 1914 and in May 1915 he was sent to join the 1st Battalion at Gallipoli. Within a month he was reported missing after an attack on the Turkish trenches.
Born 1892 at Portsoy, Banff. Son of James and Isabella (Murray) Guthrie of Springholm Schoolhouse and, latterly, of Dowan Place, Stirling. (The family grave is in Bannockburn Cemetery)
Hector's sister was a teacher at Springholm School.
Missing in action on 4 June 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Springholm village War Memorial and on the Portsoy War Memorial.


PRIVATE D. HAINING, KOSB
David Haining, Private (27035) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 19.
David was employed at Glen Farm, Crocketford, Urr when he enlisted in October 1916. He was posted to the 6th KOSB in August 1917 and killed at Ypres.
Born 1898 at Parton, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of William and Agnes Haining of Larghill, Crocketford, Urr.
Killed in action on 10 April 1918 and buried in Duhallow A.D.S. Cemetery, Belgium.


Two brothers who enlisted together at Calgary, Alberta and who, although in different battalions, both fell at Vimy Ridge on the same day.

PRIVATE J. HENDERSON, CANADIANS
James Henderson, Private (183276) 10th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Alberta Regiment) Age 27.
James was a buttermaker with the Harris Dairy Company of Edmonton when he enlisted at Calgary, Alberta in November 1915. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in May 1916 and was posted to his battalion in France in August 1916.
Born 1889 at Urr. Son of Thomas and Jane (McMillan) Henderson of Newark Farm, Crocketford, Urr.
Died of wounds on 9 April 1917 and buried at Quatre-vents Military Cemetery, Estree-Cauchy, France.


PRIVATE T. HENDERSON, CANADIANS
Thomas Henderson, Private (183261) 3rd Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Central Ontario Regiment) Age 22.
Thomas was a warehouse clerk when he enlisted at Calgary, Alberta in November 1915. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in May 1916 but on his arrival in England was diagnosed with German measles. After his recovery and other training he was posted to his battalion in France in October 1916.
Born 1894 at Urr. Son of Thomas and Jane (McMillan) Henderson of Newark Farm, Crocketford, Urr.
Killed in action on 9 April 1917 and buried in Bois-Carre British Cemetery, Thelus, France.

James Byres Kennedy, Private (22789) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 28.
James was a ploughman at Stepend Farm, Urr/Buittle when he enlisted in February 1915. He was posted to the 2nd KOSB and served at Ypres where he was wounded and invalided home in February 1917. Posted the 1st KOSB, he was wounded again, at Arras, and died at the 40th Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1889 at Urr. Son of William and Isabella (Duff) Kennedy of Rose Cottage, Haugh of Urr.
Died of wounds on 6 May 1917 and buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, France.

PRIVATE J. C. KENNEDY, RASC

John Clingan Kennedy, Private (M2/203022) 406th Motor Transport Company, Royal Army Service Corps. Age 24.
John was employed by Messrs. John Payne & Co. at the Douglas Arms Garage in Castle Douglas when he enlisted in August 1916. He served at Ypres.
Born 1894 at Urr. Son of William and Isabella (Duff) Kennedy of Rose Cottage, Haugh of Urr.
Died of wounds on 29 April 1918 and buried in Red Farm Military Cemetery, Belgium.
John was reported to be missing, presumed killed on 27 April 1918. His body was identified after the war and his date of death was determined to be 29 April.


PRIVATE J. KERR, KOSB
John Kerr, Private (1904) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King' Own Scottish Borderers. Age 21.
John was educated at Springholm Public School and afterwards was employed as a hay presser. He enlisted in September 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli on 6 June 1915.
Born 1894 at Springholm, Urr as David John Kerr Bennett. Son of Jane Bennett.
Adopted son of John and Elizabeth Anne (Mason) Kerr of Springholm, Urr.
Missing in action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Springholm village War Memorial.


2nd LIEUT. J. A. MARTIN, HLI
James Adam Martin, Second Lieutenant: 6th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. Age 34.
A procurator, managing clerk and partner with the solicitors Motherwell, McMurdo and Mitchell of Airdrie, Lanarkshire, he began his legal career with Walker and Sharp of Maxwelltown, leaving behind the farm his family had occupied for several generations. He enlisted as Lance Corporal (3058) in the Glasgow Highlanders (9th HLI) in September 1914 and was commissioned as 2nd Lt. in 6th HLI in April 1915. He left Egypt for Gallipoli on 28 June 1915.
Born 1881 at Urr. Son of John and Elizabeth (Rogerson) Martin of The Fell, Crocketford, Urr.
Missing in action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Airdrie War Memorial in North Lanarkshire.

PRIVATE J. H. MILLER, KOSB
John Hastings Miller, Private (33950) 187th Company, Machine Gun Corps. Age 20.
John enlisted as Private (1488) in the 1/5th King's Own Scottish Borderers and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He contracted jaundice and was evacuated to hospital in Manchester. When he recovered he was posted to the 187th MGC which went to Mesopotamia in November 1916.
Born 1896 at Thornhill, Morton, Dumfriesshire. Son of William Miller (Grocer) and of Jessie (McGill) Miller of the Post Office, Springholm, Urr.
Missing in action on 15 December 1916 and named on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.
Also named on the Springholm village War Memorial.


PRIVATE J. G. MURDOCH, KOSB
James Grierson Murdoch, Private (20231) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 24.
James was a farm servant at Waterside Farm, Urr when he enlisted in June 1915. He joined the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in September 1915 but contracted dysentery and was evacuated to hospital in Malta and then the UK. He joined the 2nd KOSB in France in December 1915 and served at the Somme.
Born 1892 at Urr. Son of Alexander and Elizabeth Murdoch of Haugh of Urr.
Missing in action on 3 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Urr United Free Church Roll of Honour now in the Urr Village Hall.

SAPPER W. MURDOCH, RE

William Murdoch, Sapper (140035) Royal Engineers. Age 28.
William was a joiner who had worked at Spottes Mill and was employed in Kirkpatrick Durham when he enlisted in November 1915. He died of disease in the 32nd General Hospital in Amara, Mesopotamia.
Born 1887 at Urr. Son of Alexander and Elizabeth Murdoch of Haugh of Urr.
Died on Active Service on 27 June 1916 and buried in Basra War Cemetery, Iraq.
Also named on the Urr United Free Church Roll of Honour now in the Urr Village Hall.

A former pupil of the Dalbeattie Higher Grade Public School, David landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born 1896 at Newton farm, Anwoth, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the William and Margaret (Paton) Murray of Richorn Farm, Dalbeattie.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Dalbeattie War Memorial and on the Dalbeattie School memorial.


PRIVATE W. McADAM, R.S.FUS.
William McAdam, Private (17256) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Age 22.
William was a farm servant at Hermitage Farm, Haugh of Urr when he enlisted in February 1915. He joined his battalion in France in July 1915.
Born 1892 at Haugh of Urr. Son of Jane McAdam, later Mrs. Joseph Wilson of 112 St. Michael Street, Dumfries.
William named his grandmother, Mary McAdam of Haugh of Urr, as his next-of-kin.
Killed in action on 25 September 1915 and buried in Bedford House Cemetery, Belgium.
The attack on the 25th September on the trenches held by the Germans in the vicinity of Hooge and Bellewaarde Lake was made with the object of distracting attention from the attempt to break through at Loos, away to the southward, and to contain the enemy's reserves. Like so many similar attacks, it entailed heavy losses to the attacking infantry.


PRIVATE A. H. McCAIG, KOSB
Archibald Haining McCaig, Private (25001) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 19.
Archibald was a farm servant at Alleyford, Kirkgunzeon when he enlisted in June 1916.
Born 1897 at Camphill, Kirkgunzeon, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Robert and Jane (Haining) McCaig of Barr of Spottes, Urr.
Missing in action on 31 July 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Springholm village War Memorial.

PRIVATE W. McCLUNE, KOSB
William's name was entered on the CWGC Debt of Honour Register on 1 November 2011 - see

William McClune, Private (1992) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 23.
William was employed as a byreman at Gerrieston Farm, Dunscore, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted in October 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was wounded in October and evacuated to Milton Hospital in Portsmouth and then to Gatcombe House on the Isle of Wight where he contracted pleurisy. While being treated he was found to have tuberculosis and was discharged from the army and awarded a Silver War Badge (144880) in April 1916. William died at home in Springholm.
Born 1895 at Urr. Son of Agnes Jane McClune, later Mrs Kirk. Husband of Margaret (McClure) McClune who he married on 27 April 1918 at Springholm, Urr.
Died on 12 December 1918 and buried in Urr Parish Churchyard.
Also named on the Springholm village War Memorial.


PRIVATE W. J. McCRERIE, KOSB
William James McCrerie, Private (24934) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 30.
William was a ploughman at Netherthird farm, Kelton when he enlisted in June 1916. He joined the 7th/8th KOSB in France in September but contracted a sever illness and was evacuated home. He returned to France in June 1917. He served at the Somme, Arras and Ypres and was killed at Polygon Wood near Zonnebeke.
Born 1885 at Glencairn, Dumfriesshire. Son of Robert and Agnes (Hannay) McCrerie of Little Firthhead Cottage, Urr.
Missing in action on 30 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.


PRIVATE R. McDILL, KOSB

Robert McDill, Private (18219) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 28.
Robert had been a commercial traveller, employed in the Scotch drapery trade in London and Shrewsbury. He enlisted in February 1915 and joined his battalion at Gallipoli in July 1915. He then served in Egypt before he moved with his battalion to France in March 1916. Robert was severely wounded at the Somme on 1 July 1916 and was admitted to hospital in Rochester, Kent with shrapnel wounds to his left leg, including a shattered knee bone. Robert was discharged from the army in May 1918 and awarded a Silver War Badge (397454) but died of an infected wound of the leg, and of influenza and pneumonia at home at Glen of Spottes, Urr.
Born 1890 at Lochrutton, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of David and Margaret (McMichael) McDill of Darngarroch, Balmaghie, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Died on 8 December 1918 and buried in Balmaghie Churchyard.

PRIVATE A. McHENRY, KOSB
Alexander McHenry, Private (1407) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 24.
Alexander was a tailor, employed by Mr Gowan of Dalbeattie, when he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. Alexander was killed by a shell alongside his friend Robert Swanston. (who is named on the Buittle and Dalbeattie Memorials)
Born 1891 at Palnackie, Buittle, Krkcudbrightshire. Son of William and Elizabeth (Handley) McHenry. Grandson of Robert and Mary Handley of Brook Cottage, Haugh of Urr.
Killed in action on 9 December 1915 and buried in the Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Dalbeattie War Memorial.


PRIVATE M. McKEAN, KOSB
Matthew McKean, Private (240722) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 24.
Matthew was on farm service at Milton, Crocketford, Urr when he enlisted in November 1914. He was mobilised in December 1915 and joined his battalion in Egypt in 1916. He was killed at Gaza.
Born 1893 at Urr. Son of Matthew and Anna Bella (Kenning) McKean of Milton Mill Crocketford, Urr.
Missing in action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.


PRIVATE A. W. McMORRINE, KOSB
Alexander Watson McMorrine, Private (401640) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 21.
Alexander was employed by the Gordon family at Dunjop, Bridge of Dee when he enlisted in the 5th KOSB in August 1914. He was posted to the 7th/8th KOSB in 1916 but was invalided home with dysentery in January 1917. He returned to France in June but was reported missing at Chateau Wood on Passchendaele Ridge.
Born 1896 at Urr. Son of Peter and Elizabeth (Caldow) McMorrine of Springholm, Urr.
Missing in action on 4 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Springholm village War Memorial.

Joseph Richardson, Private (9275) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards. Age 19.
A former pupil of the Dalbeattie Higher Grade Public School, Joseph enlisted in August 1914. He joined his battalion in France on 24 November 1914 and was the sniper of 3 Platoon, “C” Company. Initially thought to be a prisoner of war, he was later reported to have been killed.
Born 1895 at Dalbeattie. Son of Margaret Richardson of Eddingham Cottage, Dalbeattie - later Mrs Robert White of Blaiket Mains Farm, Crocketford, Urr and of Kirkeoch farm, Kirkcudbright.
Missing in action on 3 January 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dalbeattie War Memorial and on the Dalbeattie School Memorial.


PRIVATE W. RIDDICK, THE KING'S R.
William Riddick, Private (64889) 4th Battalion, The King's (Liverpool Regiment) Age 39.
In 1901 William was a tailor living at 286a Crown Street, in Liverpool and he had been working for Messrs Albert Henderson, Military and Naval Tailors, for many years when he enlisted in January 1917. He was wounded at Ypres and evacuated to the 1st Northern General Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne where he died.
Born 1877 at Redcastle, Haugh of Urr. Son of Samuel and Jessie Shennan (Ferguson) Riddick of Blackford, Haugh of Urr. Husband of Esther (Scott) Riddick of 64 Saxon Street, Derby Road. Liverpool who he married in 1907 in Liverpool.
Died of wounds on 31 October 1917 and buried in Liverpool (Kirkdale) Cemetery. (CWG)


PRIVATE D. SIBBALD, Y&LR
David Sibbald,Private (19122) 2nd Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment. Age 25.
David was a former pupil of the Dalbeattie Higher Grade Public School. He enlisted at Doncaster in September 1914 and landed at Boulogne with the 9th Battalion, Y&L R in August 1915. He was wounded at the Somme on 1 July 1916 and evacuated to hospital in England. He returned to France in September and was posted to the 2nd Battalion but was wounded again in the following month. He was able to rejoin his battalion in November but was wounded yet again in March 1917 and on this occasion died of his wounds.
Born 1891 at Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Son of Robina Sibbald. Nephew of Mrs. Sarah (Sibbald) Barrowman of Meikle Culloch, Urr, who he named as his next-of-kin.
Killed in action on 19 March 1917 and buried in Maroc British Cemetery, Grenay, Pas de Calais, France.
Also named on the Dalbeattie War Memorial and on the Dalbeattie School Memorial.

Not listed by CWGC/SNWM
Henry Nicholas Smith, Private - Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Age 35.
Harry was a waiter and was living at 46 Renfield Street, Glasgow when he enlisted in October 1915 He was discharged from the army in March 1916 and admitted to the Crichton Royal Institution in Dumfries. Harry died of “general paralysis of the insane” at Woodlee Asylum, Lenzie, Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire, an illness “contracted while on military service”.
Born 1883 at Urr. Son of John and Adelaide Marie (Le Messurier) Smith of Bridge End, Spottes, Urr.
Died on 17 November 1918 and buried in Urr Parish Churchyard.

PRIVATE A. M. THOMSON, CANADIANS
Alexander McNaught Thomson, Private (105537) Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. Age 30.
Alexander was farming at Francis, Saskatchewan when he enlisted in the 68th Battalion, Canadian Infantry at Regina in December 1916. He transferred to the PPCLI in France in June 1916. He was wounded at Coucelette and died on the following day.
Born 1886 at Kilontrie Farm, Crossmichael, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of James and Jane (Walker) Thomson of Kilontrie and then of Springholm, Urr.
Died of Wounds on 16 September 1916 and buried in London Cemetery and Extension, Longueval, France.
Also named on the Springholm village War Memorial.


CAPTAIN A. D. Y. HERRIES, KOSB
Alexander Dobree Young-Herries, Captain: 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 24.
Alexander was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge University. He was commissioned in the KOSB and joined the 2nd KOSB in France in September 1914. He served at Aisne, Bassee, Messines, Ypres, Neuve Eglise, Hill 60, St.Eloi, Carnoy, Armentieres, Arras and at the Somme where he was killed near High Wood, Longueval.
Born 1892 at Urr. Son of Son of Lt. Col. William Dobree Young-Herries (KOSB) and of the late Bethia Marion (Fayrer) Young-Herries of Spottes Hall, Urr.
Killed in action on 23 July 1916 and buried in Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz, France.
Also named on the Springholm village War Memorial and on memorials in Urr Parish Church and in St. Ninian's Episcopal Church in Castle Douglas.

WORLD WAR TWO

CAPTAIN D. L. BIRNEY, RIFLE BRI.

David Leslie Birney, Captain (75991) Rifle Brigade. Attached to 2 Commando. Age 27.
David was educated at Winchester College and at Trinity College, Cambridge University where he studied Law from 1933-36. Whilst working as a solicitor in London he joined the Territorial London Rifle Brigade.
Born 1914 in Simla, India. Son of Colonel Charles Folliott Birney, DSO. and Rachael Dorothy Dallas Birney of Glenswinton and Redcastle, Haugh of Urr. Husband of Cecilie Mercedes Randall (Wood) Birney of New Milton, Hampshire who he married in 1940 at Westminster, London.
Died of wounds 28 April 1942 after the St. Nazaire Raid on 28 March 1942 when HMS Campbelltown was rammed into the dry dock gates. Buried in Escoublac-La-Baule War Cemetery, St. Nazaire, France.
Also named on the Winchester College Roll of Honour.

Of the 241 Commandos who took part, 59 were posted killed or missing and 109 were captured.

Note: Temp. Brigadier General Charles Folliott Birney was originally commissioned in June 1898 in the Royal Engineers. Served at the School of Military Engineering, Chatham 1898-1900; in India 1900-1914 including operations in Tibet 1903/4. Posted to the Western Front in September 1914, he served there until the Armistice and returned to India from the Army of Occupation in August 1919 as brevit Lt. Colonel. Awarded DSO, French Legion D'Honneur (Croix de Guerre) and five times Mentioned in Dispatches. He later moved to Southern Rhodesia and was elected to the first Colonian Parliament in 1924. He was General Manager of the Rhodesian Railways.


FLYING OFFICER J. I. DOUGLAS, RAF
James Irwin Douglas, Flying Officer (Pilot) (127137) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 21.
James was onboard a BOAC Lockhead Hudson when it crashed near Khartoum. The aircraft was transporting pilots from Cairo to West Africa to collect aircraft which had been ferried out from the UK.Born 1921 at ? (Source: GRoS – Consular Returns)
Son of Alexander and Eileen Mary Douglas of Torkatrine, Urr.
Died on Active Service on 30 June 1943 and buried in Khartoum War Cemetery, Sudan.

John Alexander Glass, Gunner (1568180) Royal Artillery. Age 27.
John, of King Street, Castle Douglas, was a commercial traveller when he married in 1938. His death was registered at Lichfield, Staffordshire.
Born 1913 in London. Son of John and Jane G. Glass of Edinburgh. Husband of Margaret M. Glass of Edinburgh who he married in St. Andrew, Edinburgh in 1938.
Died on Service on 27 March 1941 and buried in Edinburgh (Comely Bank) Cemetery (CWG)
Also named on the Springholm village War Memorial.


PRIVATE W. J. GLENDINNING, KOSB
William John Glendinning, Driver/Private (3188162) 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 33.
Born 1907 at Mousewald, Dumfriesshire. Son of Jane Glendinning.
Husband of Annabella (Annie Bella K. Wolff McLaughlan) Glendinning of Hardgate, Urr who he married in 1928 in Urr.
Missing in action on 18 June 1940 and named on the Dunkirk Memorial, France.
The 4th and 5th (Territorial) Battalions KOSB as part of the 2nd BEF landed at St. Malo on 13 June but on 18 June were evacuated from Cherbourg.


STOKER G. K. HAINING, RN
Gordon Kerr Haining, Stoker 2nd Class (D/KX108945) HMS Drake, Royal Navy. Age 27.
Gordon was killed in the Norton Fitzwarren rail crash where the Paddington to Penzance train was derailed. 27 died, of whom there were 13 Naval personnel.
Born 1913 at Springholm, Urr. Son of Peter and Blanche Kerr Haining of Springholm, Urr.
Died on Service on 4 November 1940 and buried in Urr Parish Churchyard (CWG)
Also named on the Springholm village War Memorial.
