Varyag Monument
Location: Car park, off A77 at Ledalfoot, South Ayrshire
OS Ref: NX 123 894

This Russian monument is well worth stopping to have a look at if you are on the A77. I can guarantee you will not see anything else like it in this country.

The 'Varyag' was lost on the rocks off Lendalfoot in 1920 but in 1904 she was the pride of the Russian Navy when she took on the Japanese Navy when faced with impossible odds.

Two ceremonies have been held here. The first monument was not grand enough so a second more imposing cross was erected in 2007

That isn't the Scottish Saltire below the Russian Imperial Eagle, the Russian Navy used a blue cross on white background St. Andrew's Cross as their Ensign.

One of the 'Varyarg's' anchors with Ailsa Craig in the background

The rocks that did for the 'Varyag'?
