From what I've seen and read he seemed like the sort of chap who was determined to outlive all the others, if only for a few days.

The Last Tommy
So many years they were silent
The living along with the dead
Not speaking of France and Flanders
Just changing the subject instead
Then slowly, many years later
The few that were left gained a voice
To speak for their fallen comrades
War was aye a bad choice
One by one they fell in
(Now that the message was passed)
Those last great war stragglers
Joined the shot and the gassed
We remember them now they’re gone
Along with this free world they made
Especially old Harry Patch
The very last man on parade |
