Eastern Forfarshire Directory & Arbroath Year Book 1922 : page 61 records "Memorials of War Heroes "

The aftermath of war continues to be seen in many ways , and during the year the number of memorials to those who gave their life in the great conflict have been numerous .

A very handsome ALTAR erected to the memory of HIS SON by Mr Kelly in St Thomas R C Church ws dedicated on January 23rd ( 1921 )

Roll of Honour Arbroath & District 1914 -1919 has on page 164 :

Pte Kelly Queens Lon Rgt:

Private Peter Kelly, Queen's London Regiment, twenty five years of age , was the son of John Kelly , 37 Lordburn , Arbroath . He was a grocer with the High Street Cooperative Society when he joined the RAMC. In 1916 he applied for service abroad , and was transferred . He served in France , Egypt , and Salonika , and was killed in action in Palestine on the 9th March 1918. Private Kelly had three brothers who had also volunteered for service.

later in the same war memorials unveiled is a report viz

In St Thomas Church the MEMORIAL TABLET to the members of that church killed in the war was unveiled on April 3rd ( 1921)

Pat

The Scotsman of 2nd May 1921 gives more detail of the memorial to the congregation:

Arbroath

Rev. Canon V M’Donald, St Joseph’s Lochee, a former incumbent of St Thomas R.C. Church, Arbroath, last night unveiled and dedicated a mural war memorial in St Thomas Church.
The tablet is Sicilian and Nert d’Estour marble. On the upper part of the tablet is a handsome bronze Calvary – a crucifix with the figures of the Virgin and St John at the foot of the Cross.

Regards

Adam
