Hello Folks,
Could you put a slot on for Lugar? I've got one or two photos which I could post.

Thanks,
Richard

Now that I've got the hang of it, here's some I took earlier.

The memorial is in the garden of Lugar Church to the north of the A70 at Craigton Square. What I find interesting is that it also lists the men who returned.

Thanks for posting these photos. That's an interesting memorial. It looks like the two plaques don't belong together on the same memorial. Was the white plaque in a church before? There's something odd about this one.

Have you any close ups of the metal work on the top plaque? there seems to be quite a lot of detail there.

Hi Adam,
I'll need to get the ladders out, but don't worry it will be done. I'll also have a dig around and find out about the history of the memorial.

Please don't put yourself out, and don't take any risks up ladders!

I would be grateful if you could find out more about it's history though,m I'm intrigued.

Regards

Adam

Hello Adam,
As promised a while ago, here are some photos of the metal work on the Lugar Memorial.

As you can see, we've got a crouching lion, flags (one topped with a wreath), a stylised helmet and some cannon along with an anchor entwined with a wreath.

Richard

Better late than never!
This memorial was moved from its original site on the main road in 1994. It stood next to the "institute" and was suffering from the effects of vehicular pollution so it was moved several hundred yards back into the church garden.

The tablet commemorating the "Sons & Daughters" of Lugar I had to find the lady but a CWGC search did not produce a lady casualty with those surnames and initials. However for the benefit of the thread I did find , all on his own -

Name: SURGEONER, WILLIAM
Initials: W
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Cameron Highlanders
Unit Text: 7th Bn.
Date of Death: 25/09/1915
Service No: S/13494
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 119 to 124.
Memorial: LOOS MEMORIAL

MOORE, J. - had 538 names with a high percentage of Scottish Regiments.
SCOTT, J - had 510 with quite a few
SMITH, J.M. - I left to last for obvious reasons and there was only 36

But no lady.

Tony

The wording is sons and daughters who served.

So I guess the females all survived. This is a memorial to all, not just those who were killed.

I like that wording, not seen anything quite like it before.
