Girvan - Kyle & Carrick District

The Girvan war memorial is a tall grey granite obelisk on a square pedestal. The commemoration and names of the dead are on two bronze panels set into two faces of the pedestal. There are also battle honours carved into the faces of the obelisk.
The monument stands on a raised mound in the Stair Park on the sea front overlooking the Firth of Clyde.
Theatres of conflict are listed in black lead lettering on the shaft:
EAST FACE:
MAUBEUGE
1918
CAMBRAI
FLANDERS 1917
ARRAS

SOUTH FACE:
PALESTINE
SALONICA
MESOPOTAMIA
GALLIPOLI
AFRICA

WEST FACE:
ZEEBRUGGE
JUTLAND
FALKLAND
CORONEL
HELIGOLAND

NORTH FACE:
SOMME
LOOS
YPRES
MARNE
MONS

The railings have been removed from the low red sandstone wall and stairway which surrounds the site.
The memorial was by monumental masons Messrs. Scott & Rae of Glasgow. The company daybook had the following entry:
Order No. 6286, Girvan, Grey obelisk, Erected September 1922, DayBook 489.
