Private Andrew Gardner Memorial
Location: St Medan’s Church, Drummore
OS Ref: NX 135 366
Many thanks to Betty Beck the church’s Session Clerk who kindly opened the church for me on a Saturday morning.
Dark churches and highly polished brass do not make for good photographing conditions but I hope you can make out the plaque.
This is the transcription:
IN MEMORY OF PRIVATE ANDREW GARDNER
XII ROYAL LANCERS
WHO GAVE HIS LIFE FOR HIS COUNTRY
IN SOUTH AFRICA
ON APRIL 5TH 1901
ERECTED BY THE X11 ROYAL LANCERS
PAST AND PRESENT
It looks like other plaques were erected to 12th Lancers who died in the Boer War because there is another similar one, also erected by past and present members of the regiment, in Cirencester Parish Church
This is St Maden’s,
The cross in front of it is the Kirkmaiden War Memorial.
And this is St Maden himself on a window inside St Maden's. It’s off-topic but I thought I’d sneak it in.
