Dailly - Kyle & Carrick District

The Dailly war memorial is an unsusual tapering grey granite column with eight sides standing on four low octagonal steps. The commemoration and names of the WWI dead are listed according to year of death on slim bronze tablets set into the faces. The names of the WWII dead have been set in lead lettering into the granite below.
The monument stands in the village square opposite the hotel.
The memorial was by monumental masons Messrs. Scott & Rae of Glasgow. The company daybook had the following entry:
Order No. 6038, Dailly, Grey cross, Erected November 1921, DayBook 384.

Not visible in the photos but the UKNIWM record states "OCTAGONAL COLUMN ON FOUR STEPPED BASE. SURMOUNTED BY EXTREMELY UNUSUAL DEVICE, POSSIBLY A UNIQUE FORM OF CROSS - CRUCIFORM SUPPORT WITH A RING CONTAINING THREE OBJECTS, POSSIBLY THISTLES."

‘Local Men Wounded’
Official intimation has been received by Mrs. Park, 252 Low Rosebank, Dunipace, that her husband, Corporal J. Park, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders has been admitted to hospital at Rouen suffering from gunshot wounds on the right leg and right thing and calf, also on finger received on 13th July. Previous to enlisting, Corporal Park was employed as a miner.

‘Killed in Action’
Mrs. Park, Main Street, Dailly, has received the news of the death of her husband, Sergeant John Park, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders on the 28th May. In a letter, his captain says: “I am very sorry indeed to have to tell you that your husband was killed in action while on trench duty with an officer. He was hit about the shoulder with a shell, and was picked up unconscious and taken to the regimental aid post, where he died in about a quarter of an hour, without regaining consciousness. You may rest assured that everything possible was done for him, and it is some consolation to know he suffered no pain. Sergeant Park had a longer and finer record of service than most men, and was one of the remaining original number who have taken part in the fighting over the three and a half years. I had no braver or more reliable n.c.o., he had seen a great deal of hard fighting and always proved himself a magnificent soldier under all conditions. The men would have followed him anywhere. Besides being a splendid soldier he was a splendid type of a man and a great favourite with all ranks. Please accept the deepest sympathy of myself and all the officers and n.c.o.’s and men of the company in your great loss. He was buried in a British military cemetery. There were representatives of all the companies, with pipe band, and four officers, who paid tribute to their fallen hero.” Other letters of sympathy were received by Mrs. Park from her husband’s chaplain and lieutenant. Sergeant Park was 28 years of age and a native of Denny. He enlisted 10th August 1914 and had been in the thick of the fighting for 3½ years and was wounded once during the battle of the Somme. Prior to his enlistment, he was employed as a miner at Banknock, Stirlingshire. He was of a cheery and obliging disposition, and respected by all. He leaves a widow and five children.
