Located beside the road in Barr at OS Map Ref NX 275 940. This is next to the village civic memorial which you can just see in the background of the second photo.
This is an amazing memorial and has really taken my fancy. It is a cast iron drinking fountain which originally had four cups and spouts, it must have been great with the water running. The emblems are storks. It has suffered from some rusting in the past but is now covered in a good layer of paint protection.
I don't know if the memorial has ever been moved or the grounds have changed, the only inscription, apart from the dedication, reads 'keep the pavement dry' but it is now not beside the pavement.
The inscription reads...............
'In memory of
John McTaggart
Lance-Corporal 1st KOSB
a native of Barr
who died in war
at Bloemfontein
South Africa
1901
erected by the
people of
Barr'

| Lance Corporal J McTaggart is listed as having died of disease on 31st May 1901. The casualty roll doesn't give any more information than that. |
