Roxy

Thanks for the updates. I have checked the BBC but there are no further details for the recent death.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Moray Council and the Nimrod names.

Thanks

Adam

Thanks Roxy

I have added an entry for Corporal Binnie.

Since British Forces have effectively finished their mission in Iraq it may be time to split this list. Unfortunately it looks like Afghanistan may feature here for some time to come...

Someone left this roll of honour for 3 Commando Brigades tour of Afghanistan under a stone (partially attached to a wooden cross) by Monifeith War Memorial when I visited.

Marine honoured on football field

A football tournament is being held in honour of the Scottish marine
Royal Marines are gathering in the Borders for a football tournament in memory of a colleague killed in action.

Alec Lucas, 24, of Peebles, died last year after an explosion while on patrol in the Helmand Province in Afghanistan.

He was a keen footballer who played for East of Scotland League sides Peebles FC and Vale of Leithen.

The inaugural Alec Lucas Memorial Tournament at Whitestone Park in Peebles will feature 16 teams including two from the 45 Commando unit.

All proceeds from the event will go towards his memorial fund which this year will make donations to youth football in Peeblesshire and the Royal Marines Benevolent Fund.

Sadly, another name to be added to the Roll.

Details from MOD
It is with great sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm that a Private Robert McLaren from The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (3 SCOTS), was killed in Afghanistan on the morning of 11 June 2009.

Pte McLaren aged 20 years old from Kintra, by Fionnphort on the Isle of Mull, was fresh out of infantry recruit training. He was schooled at Bunnessan Primary and then Oban High School. Pte McLaren joined the Army in November 2007 and trained first at the Army Training Regiment in Winchester and then as a Royal Engineer in Surrey.

Pte McLaren ultimately decided to pursue a career as a Scottish Infantryman and attended and comfortably passed the Combat Infantryman's Course at the Infantry Training Centre, Catterick. He passed out of Seven Platoon on 3 April 2009 and was posted to The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland on operations in Southern Afghanistan.

Pte McLaren's family said:

"We are very proud of Robert; he died doing a job he loved and we will cherish fond memories of Robert for ever."

Commanding Officer 3 SCOTS, Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Cartwright said:

"Private Robert McLaren has been cruelly taken from us after only four weeks of active service in The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland.

"The Battalion was conducting an offensive operation against the insurgents in one of the most dangerous parts of the southern Afghanistan. His Company had been engaged in close combat with the insurgents for several hours and Robert had displayed enormous physical courage during this battle for one so young.

"He gave his life for his friends with his selfless commitment, moving forward in the face of a determined and ruthless enemy.

Visited Balhousie Castle (Black Watch HQ/museum, Perth) recently and found Cpl Sean Binnie had already been added to the regimental memorial there. Sobering thought how much space has been created for future entries.

Forty-Twa

I take it this memorial stands next to the cross in this post:

That's correct Adam. New stones have been installed to the left and right of the main memorial cross at Balhousie Castle. Was there with DelBoy recently

Pte Robert McLaren (killed 11 Jun 2009) was from Mull and his local memorial is Bunessan http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=2897.

In a BBC news item today, I glimsed a note in a local shop that was collecting in his name for a memorial Quaich (for a football competion I think). I hope this appears on the forum in due course.
