Bunessan - Island of Mull, Argyll
UKNIM Ref no. 44598

The Bunessan memorial takes the form of a very tall cairn built of rough blocks of local stone, surmounted by a small grey granite celtic cross with wheel-head and celtic knotwork patterns carved in relief on the face. The commemoration and names of the dead are listed in black lead lettering on a dressed grey granite tablet set into the face of the cairn.
The monument stands near the road, the A849, behind the school.

This is the local memorial for Pte Robert McLaren who was killed in Afghanistan on 11 Jun 2009 and it appeared in an item about him in BBC news today. I would hope that his name would be added to this memorial in due course.

Listed as Bunessan but, as stated on the memorial, Parish of Kilfinichen and Kilvickeon.

Updated photos of name panels or transcription would be good here.

The memorial was cleaned and fully restored in 2014 but Private Robert McLaren (Afghanistan) was not added- see 2018 images on War Memorials Online
