The National Library of Australia has started a programme of digitising out of copyright newspapers - the Australian Newspapers Digitisation Program.

http://www.nla.gov.au/ndp/

It includes Australia's first newspaper from 1803 and some run up to the mid-1950s. It is an ongoing project and details of which ones being digitised are on the website

It may be of use for finding AIF men?
