Berriedale War Memorial, Caithness
Location: Off A9 in middle of hamlet. Beside bridge
OS Ref: ND 118 227

This memorial commemorates those who seved as well as those who died. It was the first public war memorial erected in Caithness after the war. The little figure at the top is St Andrew.

The photos were taken early in the morning in poor light so apologies for the quality.

From The Scotsman 28 September 1920

    WAR MEMORIALS

BERRIEDALE.— The first war memorial completed in the county of Caithness was unveiled on Saturday by the Duchess of Portland. The monument, which has been erected entirely at the expense of the Duke of Portland, occupies a picturesque site in Berriedale Glen beside the High road. The monument is from a design of Sir Ernest George, R.A., and Mr Alfred Yeates, F.R.I.B.A., and is of simple, classical form in grey Kemnay granite, about 25 feet high, set on a stone-paved terrace about 30 feet square, and is surmounted by a figure of St Andrew cast in bronze, from a model by the sculptor, Mr Basil Gotto. The panel fronting the public road bears an inscription cast in bronze, and the north and south side panels contain not only the names of those who were killed or wounded, but also the names and regimental particulars of all who served. Of the 68 men who served, 19 were killed, and 15 were wounded. At the ceremony, which took place in the afternoon in pleasant weather, there was a parade of about 50 members of the Berriedale and Dunbeath Post of the Comrades of the Great War. Among the Duke's party were Lord and Lady Titchfield, Lord Morven, Mr and Mrs Gerald Lee, and Major Baker Carr, Rev. W. Caird Taylor, B.D., parish minister, presided, and conducted service. Thereafter the Duchess of Portland unveiled the monument, and the monument was dedicated by Mr Caird Taylor. The Duke of Portland afterwards addressed the gathering.
