It is a sad state of affairs about the bells. I sincerely hope the decision is reversed.

However whilst looking at this thread, this jumped out at me:

I got into Pitlochry High School today and photographed the Great War Plaque (to be posted).
One of those who stood out was 'Hamish' Manderston, Cameron Highlanders, for he does not appear on any other memorial in the area.

Only one Manderston appears as a casualty;
Name: MANDERSTON, JAMES
Initials: J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Cameron Highlanders
Unit Text: 7th Bn.
Date of Death: 25/09/1915
Service No: S/13939
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 119 to 124.
Memorial: LOOS MEMORIAL
BORN: MOULIN
ENLISTED: GALASHIELS, SELKIRKSHIRE
RESIDENCE: GALASHIELS

Also listed here at Galashiels.

I am related to the Gala Manders(t)ons, so I am off to investigate.

Thanks
Smile
Tracey

Update - the council have been rocked by the reaction and are saying that the decision was taken by officials before informing councillors or the Royal British Legion Scotland. A full meeting of the council is to consider the situation on 26th August. Enviromental health are sticking to their guns and saying that it's the law and there's nothing they can do about it. The initial (and only) complainer has even asked whether, if she withdrew her complaint, all of this could go away but the jobsworths are sticking to their guns.

Yet on Monday, SBC's press office maintained the council had no choice but to comply with the requirements of the law.

"To change the position would require a change in the law," said a spokesperson.

In the words of the great man - I smell s***e!

It looks like the jobsworths are digging in. Evil or Very Mad

Do we know what the eventual outcome of this was?

I have heard nothing more about it and I suspect that the council (very sensibly) has just let the matter drift.

Today (20/8/09) the council - after due consideration!!! - have decided to leave the memorial chimes as they are.

It's taken them over a year but the sensible decision has been reached.
