Millport - Island of Cumbrae, Cunninghame District
The Island of Cumbrae war memorial in Millport stands on the seafront opposite the post office. The grey granit mercat cross style memorial by Robert Gray sculptors of Glasgow is identical in design to the Newton Mearns Memorial in Glasgow by the same company,
The memorial was unveiled on 15th October 1922.

I have not yet seen the Newton Mearns memorial.
This memorial certainly looks similar to the memorial in Govan outside Govan Old Parish church. That memorial also has heads looking out from the front face of the memorial just below a set of 'battlements'

Just for the record, both the Isles of Big & Little Cumbrae were in the County of Bute during the Great War. I assume they were "traded" to Ayrshire during one of the shape-ups.

The Scotsman – 19 August 1946
MILLPORT WAR MEMORIAL UNVEILED.
At a remembrance day service at Millport yesterday, Colonel C. MacLeod Robertson unveiled a panel in the 1914-1918 -war memorial bearing the names of 17 local men who lost their lives in the second world war. Owing to the wet weather the main service was held in the Town Hall prior to the short ceremony at the memorial.

The Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 put Arran and the Cumbraes into Strathclyde Region, Cunninghame District. Ayrshire didn't exist for the duration of the Regions and Districts - it was split into four disticts within Strathclyde Region - Cunninghame, Kilmarnock & Loudon, Kyle & Carrick, and Cumnock & Doon Valley. The remainder of the county of Bute (the Isle of Bute) was placed in Strathclyde Region, Argyll District.

Thanks ADP for the article and the information. Col. Macleod Robertson was originally from Millport, had quite a bit to do with Rothesay and Largs getting the two sections of the Bute Mountain Battery in 1908 upon the formation of the Territorial Force and everything to do with the Brigade Headquarters (4th Highland (Mountain) Brigade, RGA, TF) being located in Rothesay. Before his intervention, there was to be no TF Artillery in either place. He commanded the Brigade at mobilization but was considered too old and unfit to take the Brigade to Gallipoli with 29 Division so he was given command of the brand new Highland Divisional Ammunition Column. This old, unfit colonel turned out to be the only colonel still in command at the end of the war and, apparently still fit enough in 1946 to preside at the unveiling of the WW2 Millport War Memorial in the rain!
