I visited the Devil's Porridge exhibition today and one of the attendants on duty told me that it had been agreed to add a name to the Annan memorial. He did not know if this had yet been done. I passed by and checked against my previous photos, nothing yet added. If I hear anything more (especially the name) I will make a further post. The name to be added is either WW1 or WW2.

I visited the Devil's Porridge exhibition today where they kindly allowed me to take a couple of photos of a copy of the program for the unveiling of Annan memorial. It is a large booklet so at least you know where to visit if you want to read it to check out the other details.

In Dec 2006 jamiemcginlay posted a photo of the sculptor working on the statue. Following information received, I spoke today to the proprietor of Mackies shop in Annan and he told me that the soldier posing as a model is his grandfather; Sgt John Mackie KOSB (number 240637).

In the Annan museum they confirmed that a name has been added to this memorial but I spent 15 minutes studying the memorial and photos and cannot see any name since I last photographed it in Jan 2007 or indeed since the original photos were posted. I will phone the museum and try and get more info.

If you are down that way again for research can you get a few close-up photographs of the statue. I wouldn't mind seeing it in detail now we know who the model was.

With regards to the newly added name on the memorial, I finally managed to identify him. The name added is for WW2, S Thomson of the Royal Armoured Corps. The difficulty was because they have put the name alongside an existing one rather than just being added to the list. However I wonder if they have not made a mistake with the initial? There is only one S Thomson RAC listed on the CWGC website for WW2 and he was from Fife with no obvious connection to Annan, but there is this man who is not otherwise listed on the Annan Memorial:

At last I managed to get some close-ups of the statue.

Also recently completed works at the base of the memorial - new paving stones and now illuminations. That means I will have to go back another time Shocked

this time at night to show it lit up Evil or Very Mad

Regarding Samuel/Thomas Thomson - the same name appears on the Dalbeattie War Memorial

CPL. SAMUEL THOMSON, REC.CRPS.

The only Corporal Thomson of the Reconnaissance Corps listed by CWGC and SNWM is:
Thomas Thomson, Corporal (3188899) 52nd Regiment, Reconnaissance Corps, Royal Armoured Corps. Born Kirkcudbrightshire. Age 25.
Son of Jeannie Lees of Annan.
Thought to be:
Samuel McNairn Thomson - Born 1919 at Dalbeattie.

Killed in Action 19 February 1945. Buried in Milsbeek War Cemetery, Holland. Also remembered (as Samuel) on the Memorial at St. Peter's RC Church in Dalbeattie.

"News was received at Annan yesterday morning of the sudden death of one of the territorials, Corporal Robert Jardine. The Rev. J.C. Thomson received a telegram from Captain Cunningham, who is in charge of the Annan company of the 5th K.O.S.B., to the effect that Corporal Jardine, one of his company, had died that morning from heart failure, and requesting him to notify the dead mans parents. Corporal Jardine was the second youngest son of Baillie Jardine, Annan, and has two brothers in the same company. He was 22 years of age, and had just terminated his apprenticeship as a joiner."
