Sergeant 10425 John Rae NELSON, 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders was a Sunderland Borough policemen, he resigned from the force to join HMF enlisting at Edinburgh. Unfortunately I cannot trace his police file for his history, I only have the CWGC details. His name is recorded on Sunderland Borough police war memorial.

The Scotsman, 21st December 1920

CHIRNSIDE - A war memorial in the form of a Celtic cross of bold design in rough-hewn Ravelston stone has been erected near the entrance to Chirnside Parish Church, and was unveiled on Sunday by the Earl of Home at the conclusion of a united service in the Parish Church conducted by the Rev A McKeachie MA, parish minister, and the Rev WC McDonald MA, United Free Church. The names of 25 officers and men appear on the memorial.

Among Edinburgh sculptor Alexander Carrick's letters at the National Monument Record of Scotland Office in Edinburgh, Manuscript Collection 22, there is a receipt for the carving of the letters on the Chirnside war memorial.

Pte. William Bain, 1917.
William Bain – age 20 – Private (30910) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was employed by the North British Railway Company as a clerk at Hawick Station when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in Egypt and served in Palestine where he was killed,
Born 1897 in Benfieldside, Lanchester, Co. Durham. Son of Joseph Thomas Bain and of Hannah Jane (Dent) Bain of Station Road, Chirnside and of Strathendry Mill House, Leslie, Fife.
Killed in Action on 28 November 1917 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.
Also named on the North British Railway Company memorial in Waverley Station in Edinburgh.


L.Cpl. William W. Cockburn, 1917.
William Webster Cockburn – age 35 – Lance Corporal (S/8273) 9th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
William was educated at Berwickshire High School in Duns and he had been employed as a shipping clerk in a London counting house for some years when he enlisted in East Ham, Essex shortly after the outbreak of war. He joined his battalion in France in August 1915. He died in the St John's Ambulance Brigade Hospital in Etaples.
Born 1882 in Chirnside. Son of Samuel and Isabella (Ferguson) Cockburn, of Crosshill, Chirnside. Husband of Lillian P. A. (Good) Cockburn of 48 Percy Road, Canning Town, London who he married in 1913 in West Ham, Essex.
Died of Wounds on 18 April 1917 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Berwickshire High School memorial.


Pte. Stewart Craig, 1915.
Stewart McGregor Craig – age 23 – Private (S/3692) 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Stewart was employed at the Chirnside Paper Mill when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 and he was serving in the battalion's Machine Gun Section when he was killed during the battle of Loos.
Born 1892 in Chirnside. Son of the late Isabella (Kirk) Craig (died 1897) and of the late William Craig.
In 1901 Stewart, age 8, and his brother Robert, age 7, were pupils at the Original Ragged Industrial School in Liberton Village, Midlothian. Their father was in prison in Edinburgh for child neglect.
He was taken in by his sister Mrs Alexander Robertson of Naismith's Buildings Chirnside, of Leader Terrace, Earlston, Berwickshire and of Kirkcaldy, Fife.
Missing in Action on 27 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

Pte. George Dunse, 1917.
George Dunse – age 39 – Private (25451) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George was employed at the Chirnside Paper Mill when he enlisted in the summer of 1916 . He had been in France for seven months when he was killed.
Born 1878 in Chirnside. Son of David and Jemima (Bruce) Dunse of West End, Chirnside.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


Pte. John Haig, 1916

John Haig – age 29 – Private (10/3277) 2nd Battalion, Auckland Regiment, New Zealand Infantry.
John emigrated to New Zealand in 1908 and he was working as a horse driver in the Patoka area of Hawke's Bay on the North Island when he enlisted in August 1915. He sailed from Wellington in November, landing at Suez in Egypt in December and after further training he joined the 2nd Auckland Regiment when it was formed in Egypt. He landed with them in France in April 1916.
Born 1888 in Chirnside. Son of the late Margaret (White) Haig (died 1891) and of James Haig of Chirnside Station Cottages (who died in August 1917)
Killed in Action on 15 September 1916 and buried in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, France.


Pte. William Hall, 1914.
William Hall – age 36 – Private (4273) 4th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was an apprentice stone mason when he enlisted at Duns, Berwickshire as Private (5839) in the KOSB in July 1896. He served in India from 1898 until he was discharged to the Army Reserve in January 1904. He was employed at the Chirnside Paper Mill and was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB when he was mobilised in August 1914. William was on duty as a battalion cook at the training camp at Cambusbarron near Stirling when he collapsed and died.
Born 1878 in Edinburgh. Son of Edward and Margaret (White) Hall of South Street, Duns. Husband of Elizabeth (Leithead) Hall, of West End, Chirnside who he married in 1906 in Duns,
Died on Service on 2 October 1914 and buried in Duns Cemetery, Berwickshire. (CWG)

Pte. John Herriot, 1916.
John Herriot – age 59 – Private (S2SR/02953) 598th Mechanical Transport Company, Army Service Corps.
In 1911 John, aged 53, was living at Tweedsmuir in Chirnside. He claimed to be a clerk aged 42 and 9 months when he enlisted in February 1915 and he named his brother James, a solicitor in Duns, as his next of kin. He landed at Salonica in northern Greece in July 1916 but he contracted malaria and pneumonia and he died in the 5th Canadian General Hospital in Salonica.
Born 1857 in Whitsome, Berwickshire. Son of the late James Herriot of Herriot Bank, Whitsome, Berwickshire (died 1872) and of the late
Elphingstone Margaret (Robertson) Herriot (died 1914) of Tweedsmuir, Chirnside.
Died on Active Service on 25 November 1916 and buried in Salonika (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery, Greece.


Pte. John A. Hunter, 1917.
John Alexander Hunter – age 31 – Private (201558) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a farm servant at Chirnside Mill Farm when he enlisted as Private (8674) in July 1916. He joined his battalion in Egypt in January 1917 and served in Palestine where he was severely wounded at Gaza. John was evacuated to hospital in Alexandria where he died.
Born 1886 in Chirnside. Son of John and Jane (Thomson) Hunter of Chirnside. Husband of Helen (Mabon) Hunter Naismith's Buildings and of Pinefield Cottage, Chirnside who he married in 1915 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 27 April 1917 and buried in Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Edrom Parish Church Roll of Honour.


Pte. James Hutchison, 1917.
James Hutchison – age 29 – Private (40290) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
James was employed at the Chirnside Paper Mill when he enlisted in May 1916. He was posted as Private (25145) to the 7th/8th King's Own Scottish Borderers in France in September 1916 and he was transferred to the 12th Royal Scots.
Born 1887 in Cockburnspath, Berwickshire. Son of George Hutchison and Jane Coltart (Renton) Hutchison. Husband of Sarah Wilkinson (Purves) Hutchison of Dovecot Gardens and of South Cheviot View, Chirnside who he married in 1914 in Chirnside.
Killed in Action on 12 April 1917 and buried in Athies Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

Three sons of Robert Kincaid, B.A. of Hatton House, Chirnside, Headmaster of Chirnside School, and of the late Jane (Brown) Kincaid (died 1907)
All three were educated at Chirnside and at the Berwickshire High School in Duns.

2nd Lt. A. Duncan Kincaid, 1918.
Andrew Duncan Kincaid – age 19 – Second Lieutenant, 8th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Andrew was a medical student at Edinburgh University and a member of the Officer Training Corps when he enlisted as Private (28146) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in June 1916. He was mobilised in December for officer training and commissioned in the Black Watch in April 1917. He joined his battalion in France in August but he was reported as wounded and missing, presumed killed, at Equancourt near Cambrai in the following March.
Born 1898 in Berwick-on-Tweed, Northumberland.
Missing in Action on 23 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, France.
Also named on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.


Lt. James B. Kincaid, 1917.
James Brown Kincaid – age 27 – Lieutenant, 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
James graduated from Edinburgh University M.A. with Honours in English in 1911 and had teacher training at the Provincial Training Centre in Moray House, Edinburgh. He was an English master at Kirkwall Burgh School on Orkney and a member of the Territorial 6th Royal Scots when he gained a commission in September 1914. He went to France in October 1915 and was evacuated home in May 1916 but returned to his battalion in November. James was killed a year later at Guemappe near Arras.
Born 1890 in Weem, Perthshire.
Missing in Action on 23 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Edinburgh Provincial Training Centre Memorial in Moray House, on the Edinburgh University Old College memorial and on the University's Roll of the Fallen.


2nd Lt. John B. Kincaid, 1917.
John Brown Kincaid – age 25 – Second Lieutenant, 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
John served his apprenticeship at the Commercial Bank in Eyemouth in 1913 before he moved to the London branch of the bank in 1914. He then joined the London branch of the Bank of Montreal. He was commissioned in April 1915 and posted to the RSF in France in November 1916. John was transferred to the 1st RSF in January 1917 but he was killed four months later at Monchy near Arras.
Born 1892 in Berwick-on-Tweed, Northumberland.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Bank of Montreal Roll of Honour.
