Note a "memorial" in the far background (and what appears to be a toilet block top left).

Just having a look at this. Can you give us closeups of some of the business names on the buildings on the right hand side? That might provide some clues.
Do you have any idea as to the date of the photo? That might provide a clue as well, as something in the back of my mind tells me that the war memorial might be a merkat cross. |

I think the only town in Dumfries and Galloway that might fit the bill (merkat cross and wide street) is Wigtown but I don't know it well enough and I have no source of old photos.
