There is a report of the unveiling in the Dumfries and Galloway Standard and Advertiser of 14 Sep 1921. The memorial was unveiled on Sunday 11th September. It was designed and executed by Mr R W Mackenzie of Newton Stewart and is made from Creetown granite. It is 12 feet 6 inches high and stands on a basement 8 feet by 6.

The article is a little confused as the heading states that the memorial was unveiled by Hon Mrs Sinclair but later says it was unveiled by ‘Mr Maxwell’, presumably Mr Henry Maxwell who was one of the joint secretaries of the War Memorial Committee. I guess it was a joint effort.

Extract from my talk today to Dalry school's remembrance assembly:

This is the part of the assembly where I have the privilege to tell you about the life (and death) of a man from a local memorial.

Today I am going to tell you about Andrew Doyle.

Andrew is probably the closest casualty to the school. He was born and lived in a house almost opposite the school, just two doors up from the community centre. Andrew lived with his father Thomas, his mother, three sisters and a brother, who I am told was quite good at ‘borrowing’ firewood from neighbours without getting caught! Andrew was an apprentice baker.

He enlisted into the Highland Light Infantry at the outbreak of war and was sent to France in July 1915 at the age of nineteen.

He was awarded the military medal for bravery on 9th, 10th and 11th April 1917 and was killed just a few days later on 25th April.

In his 21 months on the Western Front, he survived the battle of Loos, the German gas attacks at Hulloch and various battles on the Somme. He met his end in the battle of Arras which was an awful battle even by the standards of the Great War. Men lived not in trenches but in tunnels for long periods of time, artillery barrages were a constant threat, a new method of delivering poison gas by projector was used for the first time and tanks were in use for only the second time.

It is ironic therefore that he was killed by a sniper on a particularly quiet day when not much action was reported. If you ever see the film ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’, you will see the similarities.

The site of Andrew’s grave was lost in subsequent fighting so he is now commemorated on the Arras memorial, along with thousands of others who have no known grave.

Andrew Doyle was killed at the age of 21.

Archibald Mair's grandfather (also Archibald) was a farmer in Craigbrae, Drongan which is probably why he is also listed on the nearby Ochiltree War Memorial. Archibald (the younger)'s father, William, farmed in Gordiestoun, Dalry which is now a ruin.
