The memorial is very hard to read, difficult to differentiate between a "C" and a "G" in the lettering

I would say it's more likely to be CH for Cameron Highlanders since this village was in the Cameron's recruiting area.

This Strontian memorial has a small path leading up to it and the path is covered in ferns so when the cloud burst I got a soaking getting down !

Hello,

I grew up near Strontian, and attempted a bit of research into the names on the memorial. I suspect that many of the casualties were not residents of the Strontian area, but had some form of local connection. Rolls of honour can be seen at the Doctors' surgery. These rolls were redone over recent years as the originals were damaged by water. All those with a local connection are named. I passed the memorial looking stark and atmospheric against the snow on the 3rd of January on my way back to Stirling where I now live.

I wil look at my old notes and try to sort out any queries over the confused lettering. My transcript of the paper rolls will help.

Owain.

Hello,
I have been looking at my old Strontian notes and some research efforts which are incomplete. Tracking individuals via the CWGC can give up several possibilities with some names. Years ago, speaking to members of the older generation, there was the opinion that many individuals on the monument and the Roll of Honour were included as a result of a local connection, and not neccessarily because of living locally.

The monument has 36 names from WW1, and 3 from WW2. The paper R.of.Hon. has a further 4 names of those who did not survive WW1.

These are the names. I have made sure that GH and CH are correct as seen on the memorial.

Monument. WW1

Pte Thomas Cameron SR
Pte James Gordon GH
Sgt James McIntyre LS
Pte Angus McIntyre CH
Pte William Cameron CH
Pte Dugald McMaster KOSB
Pte Adam Gordon GH
Cpl James Gordon GH Brother of Adam.
Bomr Donald McLean RGA
Pte Donald Cameron RS
Pte Arthur G Clarke Co of Ld
LCpl Reginald G Thorburn A&SH
Pte M J Biggs RE
Pte A Cameron Cooper HLI
Pte Hugh Cameron SR
Pte Peter McGregor Canada
Pte James Cameron RS
Pte John Hugh Cameron CH
Pte Donald A McPherson SH
Capt John Cameron HMT
LCpl Thomas Watson A&SH
LCpl Hugh Cameron LS
Pte Lachlan Cameron RH
Pte Ian Fraser SH
Pte William McPherson CH
Sgt John D Cameron Canada
Pte Duncan C McDonald GH.....R of H states Cameron H.
Pte Allan Cameron Australia
Cpl Alex McIntyre MR
Pte Duncan McPhail SG
Pte Duncan McPhee RS
Pte William Johnston HLI
Pte James McMaster Canada
Pte James McMaster VBC
Cpl Allan McDonald KOSB
Pte Alex Rankin GH

WW2

Pte John McPerson CH
Pte John D Graham SH
Pte Kenneth Michael A&SH

Additionally, the Roll of Honour includes from WW1...

Pte Alex Dalgleish MTASC
Pte Peter Cameron CH
Pte John McKechnie SH
Pte O McM Thomson NZ

I believe that there are a multitude of errors on the Roll and the Monument. However, the above at least should clarify the issues over the similarities between CH and GH.

Owain.

Hi Adam,

Thanks for adding to the Strontian topic. I have the same result for O McM Thomson. I will be reworking the Strontian results when time allows.

I often wonder how many men appear on several memorials.
Bdr. Donald MacLean, RGA appears on both Strontian and the memorial in Ardgour Church. He is given the address as 1 Clovulin in the church, while the CWGC tells us that he was the son of Lachlan and Euphemia MacLean of Strontian. He is buried in Huts Cemetery, Dikkebus. He was with 249 Siege Bty. RGA. Many years ago I did visit the grave.

That is very interesting Ken. The 72nd Bn CEF was formed from the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada who were based in Vancouver. That means the Pte McMaster you found should be listed on the Scottish National War Memorial database. As far as I can see he isn't.

Never mind that he was a Scot and meets the criteria for inclusion, as a soldier in a Canadian-Scottish battalion he should be recorded too.

Once we get to the bottom of the two James McMasters, Col Binks at the castle should be contacted.

Regards

Adam

The titles of the two WMR records have now been amended to clarify them.
