From

http://www.nlb.org.uk/ourlights/history/Fair%20Isle%20South%20Lighthouse.pdf

During an air attack in December 1941, the wife of an Assistant Lightkeeper (Mrs Sutherland) was killed and her infant daughter slightly hurt. Six weeks after this the wife and daughter of Principal Lightkeeper (Smith) were killed when a second air attack produced a direct hit on the main dwelling block at 3.45pm on 21 January 1942. Two bombs were dropped in this attack, the first registered a direct hit on the west gable end of the main block of dwelling houses. The main building and spare caught fire and were completely burnt out.Roderick Macaulay, Assistant Lightkeeper, walked 3 miles from the North Lighthouse where he and his daughter had a narrow escape in a former raid. Through snowdrifts and gale force winds he journeyed to lend a hand in restoring the South Light to operational order, and back again in the dark to take his own regular watch; he received the BEM for outstanding services.A plaque in memory of the War dead was erected by the Northern Lighthouse Board and Scotland’s Lighthouse Museum on the boundary wall of the Station in March 1998.

Oddrun

Would you know where Catherine Sutherland, Margaret Helen Smith & her daughter are buried and the possibility of obtaining a photograph of their graves?

Also a photograph of Fair Isle South Lighthouse.

Whilst my personal project is recording female service & associated organisation casualties I do record a representative selection of 'Civilian' casualties whose function justifies recording. Lighthousemen, whose roll was important at all times, became a particular target in wartime and whilst the men do not feature in my project their wives were not imune as is proved here.

Pity about the memorial only just eleven years old and already missing some of its letters.

Regards

Tony

^^Neither myself or Oddrun have had time to look in here for ages, so sorry about late relpy Embarassed
Here's a link to Catherine Sutherland (Strachan), on the Bayanne website.
http://www.bayanne.info/Shetland/getperson.php?personID=I86139&tree=bayanne_1
It's a great site for info on Shetlanders. So searching for the other names there should come up with some answers.

Somehow, we failed to get a picture of the grave of Catherine Sutherland, but we'll add it to our wish list if we get back to Bressay.

Pictures and info about the Fair Isle South Lighthouse are here:

Robbie
