Makerstoun suffered in the recent gales when some large, mature trees were blown over. The kirk itself was slightly damaged and some stones were knocked over, including this CWGC one.

Private William Mack, 7328, served with the 1/4th Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed on 12/7/15 when his battalion, supported by the 1/5th K.O.S.B., made a frontal attack on the Turkish trenches. The ground had been churned up by artillery, the gorse was ablaze and the men charged into a hail of bullets and shrapnel on a blazing hot day. It is said that in a roll-call after the battle, only 70 men out of the 700 who had been in the attack answered their names. Mack was reported missing, presumed dead, and his body never recovered. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial.

Private Joseph Morrison Quarry, 55957, served with the Royal Army Medical Corps and died on 5/9/15 aged 19. He was born in Makerstoun, became a forester, and was the son of George and Charlotte Quarry. He is buried in the Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta. He was awarded the 14/15 Star. He had contracted dysentery while on duty in Salonika and was taken to a military hospital on Malta. In his army files, there is a lurid description of his final hours which I trust his family did not get to see. His personal effects were returned to his father and included a New Testament, a Gospel of St. Luke, two pipes, £1, three photos, a torch, a cigarette case and a razor strop. Quarry's father wrote back complaining that several valuable articles which his son had - including two watches, a pocket book and two valuable cigarette cases - were missing and, as he had died in hospital, there must have been some pilfering. Unfortunately, occurrences like this were far from rare and Quarry's own unit, the RAMC, was said by cynical soldiers to stand for: 'Rob All My Comrades'.
