George Anderson – age 18 – Private (7480) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers
George was employed as a groom at East Reston, Ayton, Berwickshire when he enlisted in December 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1896 at Boghall, Lasswade, Midlothian. Son of George and Helen (Howden) of East Reston, Ayton.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Ayton Parish War Memorial.


PTE. JAS. N. BLACK, S.A.I. 1917
James Nisbet Black – age 32 – Corporal (10394) 8th Regiment, South African Infantry.
James sailed from Durban for German East Africa in May 1916 and was posted to the 8th Regiment in July. He was reported missing from the camp at Mile 25 on the Kilossa-Iringa Road in what is now central Tanzania.
Born 1886 in Coldingham. Son of the late Cecilia (Nisbet) Black (died 1913) and of John Black of Reston, Coldingham. John died in Durban, South Africa in 1922.
Brother of Allison Chisholm (Black) Walker of Riley Road, Durban.
Missing in Action on 17 March 1917 and named on the Dar es Salaam British and Indian Memorial, Tanzania


PTE. W. BOOKLESS, K.O.S.B. 1915
William Bookless – age 27 – Private (7553) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a mole-trapper when he enlisted in December 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1888 in Swinton, Berwickshire. Son of John and Mary (Shiels) Bookless of Swinton. Husband of Lizzie (White) Bookless of Auchencrow, Reston, Coldingham who he married in 1911 in Coldingham.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Reston United Free Church memorial and on the Swinton Parish War Memorial together with his brother John Bookless, Private (315609) 9th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) who died on 1 November 1918.

PTE. ALEX. BROWN. K.O.S.B. 1916
Alexander Brown – age 25 – Private (22759) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander had been an assistant gardener and then an under gamekeeper at Renton House, Coldingham. He enlisted under the Derby scheme and he was mobilised in early 1916.
Born 1890 in Banchory Ternan, Kincardineshire. Son of James and Margaret Brown of Strachan, Kincardineshire.
Missing in Action on 20 November 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Strachan Parish War Memorial.


PTE. JOHN CUNNINGHAM, K.O.S.B. 1917
John Cunningham – age 25 – Private (23422) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a gardener at Hillwood, Corstorphine, Edinburgh when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in France in June 1916.
Born 1892 at Fushiebridge in Borthwick, Midlothian as John Walter Cunningham. Son of Thomas and Jane (Tait) Cunningham of Haughhead, Gorebridge, Midlothian. Husband of Jean (Redpath) Cunningham of Renton Barns, Grantshouse, Coldingham who he married in 1914 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 15 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Grantshouse United Free Church Roll of Honour and on the Borthwick Parish War Memorial.


PTE. R. DENHOLM, R.SCOTS 1916
Robert Denholm – age 31 – Private (18659) 15th Battalion (1st Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
Robert was a miller with his father at East Reston Mills, Coldingham when he enlisted in December 1914. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in January 1916 but he was killed six months later on the first day of the battle of the Somme.
Born 1885 in Coldingham. Son of the late Dorothy (Cleghorn) Denholm (died 1896) and of Robert Denholm of East Reston Mills and of Cairncross Farm, Ayton, Berwickshire.
Missing in Action on 1 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Coldingham Parish War Memorial.

PTE. H. DICKSON, SEAFORTHS 1915
Hugh Aitchison Dickson – age 26 – Private (S/6236) 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Hugh landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but he was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1889 in Coldingham. Son of Robert and Janet (Jeffrey) Dickson of Scott's Buildings, Reston, Coldingham.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Reston United Free Church memorial.


PTE. G.H. DUNN, K.O.S.B. 1918
George Hay Dunn – age 28 – Private (201902) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1915 George was a tram car conductor in Glasgow. His service number indicates that he enlisted in the 4th (Border) KOSB and that he was posted to the 1st Battalion in France.
Born 1890 in Coldingham. Son of William and Annie (Gordon) Dunn of Braeheads, Reston, Coldingham. Husband of Margaret (Wallace) Dunn of 64 Ayr Street, Springburn, Glasgow who he married in 1915 in Glasgow.
Missing in Action on 11 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.


L/CPL. GEO. B. FAIR, R.SCOTS 1917
George Bell Fair – age 24 – Lance Corporal (30608) 15th Battalion (1st Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
George enlisted in the Royal Scots in December 1915 and was mobilised in April 1916. He served in the 3rd Reserve Battalion until he was posted to the 11th Battalion in France in March 1917 and he was transferred to the 15th on 10 April, only to be killed less than three weeks later.
Born 1892 in Grantshouse, Coldingham. Son of the late George Fair (died 1911) and of Margaret (Shearlaw) Fair of Cherry Tree Cottage, Grantshouse, Coldingham. Husband of Georgina Maltman (Herriot) Fair of Dean Oil Works Cottages, Newtongrange in the Parish of Cockpen, Midlothian who he married in 1914 in Newbattle, Midlothian.
Missing in Action on 28 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Grantshouse United Free Church Roll of Honour and on the Newtongrange War Memorial.

SAPPER JOS. S. FAIR R.E. 1918

Joseph Fair – age 37 – Sapper (WR/296357) 107th Railway Company, Royal Engineers.
Joseph was employed on the Hartrigge Estate, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire when he enlisted as Driver (026029) in the Army Service Corps in November 1914. At some point he transferred to the Royal Engineers as Sapper (164023) and joined the Light Railway Operating Company in Salonica, northern Greece. Joseph died in the 42nd General Hospital.
Born 1881 in Coldingham. Son of the late George Fair (died 1911) and of Margaret (Shearlaw) Fair, of Cherry Tree Cottage, Grantshouse, Coldingham.
Died on Service on 18 December 1918. and buried in Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, Greece.
Also named on the Grantshouse United Free Church Roll of Honour and on the Jedburgh War Memorial.

PTE. AND. HARVEY, GORDONS 1914
Thought to be:
Alexander Harvey – age 23 – Private (S/7263) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Alick was a farm servant at Horseley, Houndwood, Berwickshire when he enlisted in October 1914. He joined his battalion in France in March 1915 but he was fatally wounded two months later.
Born 1892 in Norham, Berwick, Northumberland as Alexander Jeffrey Harvey. Son of Andrew and Mary (Rae) Harvey of Cocklaw, Ayton, of Blackadder Mains, Edrom and of Ayton Law, Ayton, Berwickshire.
Died of Wounds on 16 May 1915 and buried in Bethune Town Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Houndwood Parish Church Roll of Honour, on the Edrom Parish and on the Ayton Parish War Memorials together with his brother Joseph Harvey, Driver (T4/236088) Army Service Corps who died on 25 July 1918.


PTE. RALF HILLS, A. & S.H. 1918
Ralph Hills – age 20 – Private (S/18217) 1/5th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Ralph was a farm servant at Mount Alban Farm, Reston, Coldingham when he enlisted in the 11th Argylls. In June 1918 he was transferred to the 1/8th Battalion and then to the 1/5th Battalion.
Born 1898 in Lowick, Glendale, Northumberland. Son of the late Ralph Hogg Hills (died 1907) and of the late Emily Agnes (Cuthbert) Hills (died 1915)
His sister Emily Agnes Hills was named as his legatee.
Missing in Action on 14 October 1918 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Lowick Village War Memorial together with his brother Bryan Hills, Sergeant (202881) 12th/13th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers who died on 20 February 1918.

David was employed at Haughhead Farm, Reston, Coldingham and was a member of the Reston United Free Church choir when he enlisted in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1895 in Reston, Coldingham. Son of the late Margaret (Wilson) Hunter (died 1904) of Haughhead, Reston, Coldingham and of William Hunter of Crumstane, Edrom and of Kimmerghame Mains, Duns/Edrom.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Edrom Parish War Memorial and on the Reston United Free Church memorial.

PTE. H.W. HUNTER, K.O.S.B. 1917

Henry Wilson Hunter – age 22 – Private (201039) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Henry enlisted from Haughhead Farm, Reston in June 1915 and as Private (7868) he joined his battalion at Gallipoli in November. His twin brother David, Private (7368) had already fallen there on 12 July. Henry then served in Egypt and in Palestine where he was fatally wounded. His burial place was lost.
Born 1895 in Reston, Coldingham. Son of the late Margaret (Wilson) Hunter (died 1904) of Haughhead, Reston, Coldingham and of William Hunter of Crumstane, Edrom and of Kimmerghame Mains, Duns/Edrom.
Died of Wounds on 15 December 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Duns Burgh and Parish War Memorial, on the Edrom Parish War Memorial and on the Reston United Free Church memorial.


PTE. JOHN KILBRIDE, K.O.S.B. 1918
John Kilbride – age 34 – Private (23760) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1891 John was living with his grandparents James and Barbara Harper in Corstorphine, Edinburgh and in 1901 he was with his grandmother Ann Kilbryde, his father Michael and other siblings in Cramond, Edinburgh. He was an Insurance Agent living in Renton, Coldingham when he enlisted.
Born 1884 in Corstorphine as John Kilbryde. Son of the late Janet (Harper) Kilbryde (died 1887) and of Michael Kilbryde of Cramond. Husband of Catherine Cameron (Wilson) Kilbride of South Renton who he married in 1914 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 23 July 1918 and buried in Buzancy Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Grantshouse United Free Church Roll of Honour and on the Cramond War Memorial.

PTE. JOS. LEARMONTH, SEAFORTHS 1915
Note: The family name varies between Learmonth and Learmouth from record to record.
Joseph Christopher Learmouth – age 30 – Private (1230) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Joseph was a farm servant in the Edrom. Chirnside and Reston areas for a number of years but he was employed by the North British Railway Company when he enlisted in 1912. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in August 1914 and fought at Mons, the Marne and the Aisne where he was wounded and evacuated home. After he had recovered he rejoined his battalion in January 1915 but he was killed at St Julien near Ypres.
Born 1885 in Coldingham, Berwickshire as Christopher Joseph Learmonth.
Son of Jane Learmonth.
In 1891 he was living as Joseph with his grandmother Christina Learmouth and other family members, including his mother Jane, at Hutton, Berwickshire and in 1901 as Joseph C. Learmouth, born Coldingham, he was still with his grandmother Christina at Cockburnspath, Berwickshire.
Killed in Action on 25 April 1915 and buried in Seaforth Cemetery, Cheddar Villa, Belgium.
Also named on the Edrom Parish War Memorial and on the Edrom Parish Church Roll of Honour.


TROOPER A. H. LOGAN, A.L.H. 1917
Adam Hastie Logan – age 30 – Private (5702) 9th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
Adam was educated at the Berwickshire High School in Duns before he emigrated to Australia. He was a book-keeper when he enlisted at Townsville in north-eastern Queensland in December 1915 and he sailed from Brisbane in May 1916. He arrived in England in July and spent almost two years in Command Depots during which time he was promoted to Sergeant. In May 1918 he volunteered for overseas service and reverted to Private to join the 9th Battalion in France.
Born 1889 in Ayton, Berwickshire. The birth was also registered in Coldingham. Son of the late Adam Smith Logan (died 1915) and Agnes Veitch (Turnbull) Logan of Ferney Castle, Reston, Coldingham.
Missing in Action on 22 July 1918 and named on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France
Also named on the Houndwood Parish Church Roll of Honour and on the Berwickshire High School memorial.
His brother John served as Trooper (1615) in the 10th Light Horse. He survived the war and returned to Australia.

William Alexander Miller – age 32 – Private (241576) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William as Private (5278) joined his battalion in Egypt and served in Palestine where he was fatally wounded at Gaza.
Born 1884 in Coldingham. Son of John and Mary (Mills) Miller of Ferney Castle, Reston, Coldingham. Husband of Helen (Young) Miller of 33 Balcarres Street, Morningside, Edinburgh who he married in 1915 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 24 April 1917 and buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Reston United Free Church memorial.


PTE. AND. OLIVER, K.O.S.B. 1917
Andrew Oliver – age 29 – Private (16797) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew joined his battalion in France in March 1915.
Born 1888 in Bunkle & Preston, Berwickshire. Son of the late Mary (Wood) Oliver (died 1893) and of the late Andrew Oliver (died 1911) and step-son of Isabella (Carruthers) Oliver who married Andrew in 1897 in Ladykirk, Berwickshire. Brother of Walter and Janet Oliver of Brockholes, Grantshouse and of Cairncross, Reston.
Missing in Action on 4 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Grantshouse United Free Church Roll of Honour.


PTE. ALEX. PONTON, CAMERONS 1914
Alexander Ponton – age 31 – Private (6132) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Alexander had been an apprentice tailor with his father when he enlisted as Private (4219) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers Volunteers in March 1902. He was a tailor when he re-enlisted at the outbreak of war and he landed at Le Havre in August 1914.
Born 1883 in Spott, Haddingtonshire, East Lothian. Son of Francis and Mary Ann (Dale) Ponton of South Renton, Grantshouse, Coldingham. Husband of Elizabeth Wood (Brown) Ponton of South Renton who he married in 1907 in Bunkle & Preston, Berwickshire.
Missing in Action on 22 October 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Houndwood Parish Church Roll of Honour.
