The first picture shows the parish church and you can make out the two memorials on the wall.

LIEUT. STANLEY ATKINSON, R.A.
Stanley Atkinson – age 37 – Lieutenant (295786) Pioneer Corps with The Queen’s Royal Regiment (West Surrey)
Stanley was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery in October 1943 and was posted to the Pioneer Corps in April 1944.
Born 1908 in Barrow in Furness, Lancashire.(now Cumbria) Son of Edward Ellery Atkinson and Mary Jane (Edmondson) Atkinson. Husband of Marjorie Atkinson (Povey) of Rockcliffe, Colvend who he married at Barton upon Irwell, Lancashire in 1934.
Died on Active Serviceon 24 December 1944 and buried in Yabe Cemetery, Lagos, Nigeria.


FLT. SGT. JOHN H. BARR, B.Sc. R.A.F.V.R.
John Hamilton Barr, Flight Sergeant (1366045) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 32.
John had graduated with a BSc. Degree from Glasgow University in 1933 and was a teacher in Dalbeattie in September 1939. His Wellington bomber, equipped with Leigh Searchlight, was lost after taking off from RAF Chivenor in North Devon on an anti-submarine patrol in the Western Approaches/Bay of Biscay.
Born 1911 at Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire. Son of Alexander Hamilton Barr and of Barbara (Foggo) Barr. Husband of Anne McDiarmid Barr Of Kirkbean who he married in 1939 in Colvend. Son-in-Law of Alford and Jane Anderson of Craigbittern, Sandyhills, Colvend.
Missing in Action on 29 September 1943 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Windsor.
Also named on Dalbeattie War Memorial, on the Royal British Legion Roll of Honour now in Dalbeattie Parish Church. on the Lesmahagow War Memorial, on the Hamilton Grammar School memorial and on the Glasgow University Roll of Honour.



FLT. SGT. ALLAN K. EDGAR, R.A.F.V.R.
Allan Knowles Edgar, Flight Sergeant (1380422) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 22.
Allan was educated at the George Watson's College in Edinburgh from 1934 to 1939 before he returned to Argentina to enter his father's business, but in September 1939 he returned to the UK to enlist.
The family travelled regularly between Liverpool and Buenos Aires from 1925 with Allan’s last trips being in 1937 and 1939. He was a member of the Buenos Aires Cricket and Rugby Club.
Allan's Halifax bomber took off from RAF Elvington in Yorkshire for a raid on the Skoda works in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia but the aircraft caught fire and crashed in southern Germany. He was buried in Boeblingen Cemetery, Baden-Württemberg but re-interred in Durnbach in July 1948.
Born 1921 at West Derby, Lancashire. Son of Thomas Edgar, formerly of Kippford, and Elsie (Knowles) Edgar.
Killed in Action on 17 April 1943 and buried in Durnbach War Cemetery, Bad Tolz, Germany.
Also named on the George Watson's College memorial, on the Memorial to the Fallen in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Buenos Aires and on the Argentine British Community Council memorial.

SGT. JOHN HEWITSON, R.A.F.
There are 2 Sergeant John Hewitsons listed by CWGC both RAFVR but neither have an established connection with Colvend.


SGT. PLT. GORDON J. McFAYEAN, R.A.F.V.R.
Gordon John McFadyean, Flight Sergeant (1385941) Royal air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 21.
Gordon was the pilot of a Lockheed Hudson of 48 Squadron RAF, Coastal Command based at Gibraltar. In December 1942 the squadron was tasked to fly patrols over the entrance to the Mediterranean during Operation Torch and remained there for just over a year. The aircraft had been converted to carry under-wing, anti-ship/submarine rockets and was on a training flight when it was seen to crash into the sea.
Born 1923 at Lambeth, London. Son of Kenneth and Elsie McFadyean of Rockcliffe, Colvend.
Missing in Action 23 October 1943 and named on the Malta Memorial, Valletta, Malta.
Also named on an individual memorial in Christ Church, Dalbeattie.


SUB. LT. RICHARD J. McHAFFIE, R.N.V.R.
Richard James McHaffie, Sub Lieutenant (A) Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. Age 21.
Born 1923 at Hackney, London. Son of Arnold and Agnes Jane McHaffie of Wood Green, Middlesex who married at Midtown, Colvend.
Died on 10 October 1944 in an air accident with 1843 Squadron, Fleet Air Arm at HMS Gannett, Northern Ireland, buried in Colvend Parish Churchyard. (CWG)

FLY. OFF. ALASTAIR N. L. McQUEEN, R.A.F.V.R.
Alastair Norman Leigh McQueen, Flight Lieutenant (Pilot) (1129934) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 31.
Alastair was educated at Sedberg School, Yorkshire (now Cumbria) at Glasgow School of Architecture 1932-35 and at the Bartlett School of Architecture at University College London until 1939. He was an architect, admitted ARIBA in July 1938. He was commissioned from Flight Sergeant (1117113) to Pilot Officer in July 1942 and promoted to Flight Lieutenant in August 1944. He was killed by ground fire near Nijmegen, Netherlands whilst flying an Air Observation Auster aircraft of 2 Tactical Air Force attached to the Tactical HQ of 21 Army Group.
Born 1914 at Corsock Bridge, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late James McQueen of Crofts, Corsock and of Edith (Groves) McQueen of Roughhills, Sandyhills, Colvend.
Killed in Action 9 February 1945 and buried in Brussels Town Cemetery, Belgium.


FLT. LT. ANGUS J. M. MILNE, D.F.C. R.A.F.V.R.
Angus John Mathewson Milne, Distinguished Flying Cross, Flight Lieutenant (Pilot) (138662) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 21.
In July 1941 Angus crossed into the USA at Detroit en route from Halifax, Canada to Lincoln Flying School, Florida, giving his address as Craigmount, Sandyhills, Colvend, the residence of his father J. M. Milne. Angus was commissioned from Sergeant (134450) to Pilot Officer in January 1943. In August 1943 he was awarded the DFC for actions during bombing raids on the Rhur and Berlin as Acting Flight Lieutenant (138662) of 214 Squadron. His parents attended an investiture at Buckingham Palace in December 1944 to collect his medal. He had been killed in September 1943 as the pilot of a Halifax of 138 (Special Duties) Squadron, shot down over Denmark while transporting three Polish Liberation Army agents of the Special Operations Executive behind enemy lines.
Born 1922 at Penang, Straits Settlement. Son of John Mathewson Milne and Joan Anderson Milne of Richmond, Surrey and of Sandyhills, Colvend.
Killed in Action on 14 September 1943 and buried in Esbjerg (Fourfelt) Cemetery, Denmark.


COL. SGT. ALEXANDER S. SYME, K.O.S.B.
Alexander Stark Syme, Colour Sergeant (3190521) 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 40.
Born 1902 at John St. Dalbeattie. Son of James and Grace Syme of Glenairlie Terrace, Dalbeattie. Husband of Christina Smith Syme of Cairngill Cottage, Colvend and of Lakeview, Lochfoot.
Died on Active Service on 4 February 1943 from a rifle bullet wound on Scalloway Road, Lerwick, Shetland and buried at Dalbeattie Cemetery. (CWG)
Alexander's daughter Margaret was born at Lochfoot, Lochrutton on 29 January 1943.

SGT. JOSEPH WATRET, 17/21 LANCERS.
Joseph Watret, Sergeant (409160) 17th/21st lancers (Royal Armoured Corps). Age 27.
Born 1915 at Borgue, Kirkcudbrighshire. Son of Joseph and Lilian Watret of Covend.
Missing in Action on 13 January 1943 and named on the Medjez-el-Bab Memorial, Tunisia.


LIEUT. DAVID W. LEGGATT, R.N.
David William Leggatt, Lieutenant, H.M. Submarine Usk, Royal Navy. Age 24.
David lived with his uncle and aunt, Oliver Heywood Haslam and Agnes Miller (Duncan) Haslam at Cairngill House, Sandyhills, Colvend.
Before the war he was an acting Sub-Lieutenant with a seniority date of 1 May 1937. He joined the submarine training course at HMS Dolphin (Submarine Depot, Gosport) on 25 April 1938, served on the submarine depot ship HMS Tatania and then on the training submarine HMS H31.
On 17 December 1938 he joined HM Submarine “Regent” and transferred to HM Submarine “Usk” on 7 March 1941. The “Usk” sailed from Malta on 19 April 1941 to patrol off the north-west coast of Sicily but on 25 April signalled that due to intense anti-submarine activity she was moving to the Cape Bon area off the coast of Tunisia. She was never heard from again.
Born 1916 in Bolton, Lancashire. Son of William and Mildred Heywood (Haslam) Leggatt of Kepong, Federation of Malay States.
Lost at sea late April/early May 1941 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

This is clearly a civic memorial rather than a church one so I have renamed the thread and moved it to the Civic section.
