Pte John McLaren
2nd Cameron Highlanders
Died 1/10/1918

This mans' brother William Ross McLaren won the MM at the battle of Y ravine
Monday November 13th 1916. He also was the man who built
'The Comrades Hut' in Acharn, in which these photos can be found.
He was quite a man, as no doubt was John.

Again am indebted to another Grandson of William Ross McLaren for this great tribute to Pte John McLaren
Badly damaged in a fire, written by the Rev William Gillies it reads;

I have been talking to the children about the
qualities of obedience, earnestness, and manliness
and love that marked the character of Samuel as
boy and man and I should like, before closing to
make a reference to boy who grew up
among us who was endowed with these qualities and
who has now died in his countries service. Most
of us here were well aquainted with the late Pte
John McLaren and Camerons, and we held him
in the highest respect.
In civil life we knew him to be quiet and
modest, as a workman he was most industrious
and painstaking; as a son and brother he was
dutiful and affectionate.
Four years ago this country was in dire straits
Kitchener was calling for men. John McLaren
heard that call and right away responded.
He enlisted in the Cameron Highlanders and in
the course of time was sent to France. There he
took part in many a fierce struggle, until in 1915
his Division was transferred to Macedonia to hold
the Bulgars back. There he had to work hard in
a trying and extremely unhealthy climate-----
and helped to prepare those extensive lines----
that saved the city of Salonika from -----
Later on he advanced to the malaria-----
the Struma. He took a brave and manly part in
many raids and battles that have been --------
of here at home. When not engaged in-------
life out there was weary and monotonous in the extreme
but he held on with-----------------------------------
and tenacity until after-------------------------
turn came for leave home. While he was with us
here the news came that an advance had been
made in Macedonia and before he could have been
far on his way back Bulgaria surrendered. We
hoped that he was returning to enjoy the victory to
which he had contributed his strength and earnest
spirit; but the heavenly father had other plans
for him. His fighting was indeed finished and all
his victories won. He was called to enjoy a better
place than earth could give. Travelling through
Italy, he contracted a chill that developed into
pneumonia and in the hospital attached to the rest
camp at Tarantino he died. His remains are buried
among the graves of that sunny land and his spirit
enjoys the light of the blessed father----
We mourn for him----------

Indeed we do.

Mike

The orphanage is the building on the right.

The memorial around 1920-ish.

The top of the building, just visible on the right of memorial, is that of the Holder ( community ) hall, the building to the left of the orphanage in top photo

I am indebted to the Grandson of Lt William Ross McLaren MM for this historic photograph. It is of the unveiling ceremony of the Kenmore War Memorial. Highlighted are:
1. Lady Breadalbane
2. Rev William Gillies
3. Lt William Ross McLaren MM. The man who Won the Military Medal at battle of Y Ravine Beaumont Hamel, on a very foggy 13th November 1916
He also built the Archway to the entrance of the church, built Acharn Comrades Hut, was on the War Memorial Commitee. Some man!

Brilliant Mike!

It's not very often that any more than the dignitaries are named, so to to be able to identify William McLaren is excellent.

I wonder how he felt post war being involved in those projects.

As you said - 'Some man'!

Yes Anne. It must have been a difficult day. He was wounded on at least one occasion. After Beaumont Hamel he was promoted to Lt served with the Durham Light Infantry. The more I find out about him, the more I admire him.

The photograph collection has him as Donald Cowan but I think that must be a mistake. I think it is Hugh Cowan.

Private Harold Towner - was my grandfather's brother. His full name was Alfred Harold Towner and he was actually born in Barcombe, Lewes Sussex, but was raised on Jersey Island. Having been placed in the Kenmore Orphanage at such a young age he probably didn't know he was actually born in Barcombe. Harold was one of seven siblings left orphaned upon the deaths of his parents in 1898. My grandfather James, his eldest sister, and a younger brother where admitted to Dr. Barnardo's in London, two sisters went to Waifs & Strays, and Harold and his brother Albert entered the Kenmore Orphanage. I have been fortunate in finding information on all the siblings and have had the priviledge to connect with their descendents.
Much thanks to Mike for the pictures, and information you sent me on Harold and the orphanage. The family has truly appreciated them.
If any one has more information on Harold, his brother Albert, or the Kenmore Orphanage I'd love to hear from you.
