The entry in the official Roll confirms she was conferrred the Decoration of the Royal Red Cross, 2nd Class ( Associate Royal Red Cross). The medal was presented to her by the King at Buckingham Palace on 20th April 1918, a few months before her death.
The record confirms she was a ordinary civilian nursing Sister, not a Military or Red Cross nurse, and the LG entry states she was a Sister at Bermondsey Military Hospital.

As a holder of the 2nd Class of the medal she should have ARRC, not RRC, after her name. It might be worth checking a letter A is not missing at Nairn.
It can be seen that the officials also got her name wrong in the Roll, but they have corrected their error.

Whilst the plaque containing the names of the fallen from Nairn is weatherworn (it is difficult to read RRC!) it does no appear that the plaque has ever read 'ARRC'.

It seems to me that a reason that there is a confliction between Isobel and Isabel may be that Sister Mackintosh was never known by that name; she may have been 'Izzy' or 'Bella' or even 'Marion' (her middle name). Many of my colleagues do not know what my first name is; let alone how it is spelled!

Roxy

Regardless of all the possibilities you mention, I think it more likely that either an understandable error was made or the more usual spelling Isobel used without considering it could be different. We cannot know who locally forwarded her name or whether they knew the correct spelling.
That said, her Death Certificate and headstone at Nairn are certainly Isabel.

All,

The latest information from the Highland Council is that the name of Flt Lt Allan Squires, CXX Sqn RAF, will be added to the Nairn War Memorial and that 'this will be completed at an early date'.

I'm chuffed - well done the council!

That is good news.

Can you explain the procedure / process used by Highland Council to confirm his qualification to be included and how the planning application for Listed Building consent went through so quickly?
Was the memorial's owner discovered?

Well done the council for recognising the Squires family as part of the Nairn community. Well done to Roxy too for keeping this matter in the Councillor's minds.

Regards

Jas,

I don't know the procedure that was followed, but the information came from via Director of Transport Environmental and Community Services who stated that he had to consult with a number of other organisations. Other than asking the council to consider my request to have Allan's name put on the WM, I left in their (obviously quite capable) hands.

If I glean any more information, I will, of course, post.

Written consent was received by Highland Council from Historic Scotland on 15 Oct 08 to add the name of Flt Lt Allan Squires RAF to the Nairn War Memorial. Highland Council are waiting for confirmation of personal details from a member of the Squires family prior to completion.

Well done the Highland Council. And thanks to Historic Scotland; my membership will continue!

Great News.
Can you advise how the Listed Building Consent planning case went and who made the application? It is that process which involves Historic Scotland and also gives the local population and consultees the opportunity to comment on the proposal after it is advertised in the press.

Jim,

The paperwork was completed by Highland Council as intimated above; you will have to speak to them if you want specifics. If that is the case, PM me and I'll give you the details of the people that I have had correspondence with.

I do not intend to contact anyone.
The process you describe does not sound like a Listed Building Consent application. As the owner of a Listed property I was curious to learn how changes could be made to a " B " Listed structure without the publicly accountable planning process having been gone through. It may that this confirms the memorial is " owned " by the Council.

It is clear that Roxy is not aware of the process gone through. I see no reason to continue to "grill" him on this. If you wish to find out how it was done, then contact the people who put the application through.

End of discussion.

I have today been informed by Highland Council that the plaque with the name of Flt Lt Allan Squires was added to the Nairn War Memorial on Monday. I'll provide a photographic update at the earliest opportunity.
