This Ministers , Probationers and Students of Divinity war memorial located in St Giles Cathedral Edinburgh lists

2nd Lieutenant JAMES WHITTINGHAME ROBERTSON, 1/ 7th Bn Black Watch kia 23 April 1917 aged 29 years the son of the late Rev Dr David R Robertson & Mrs Roberton . Born Dundee Grave Brown's Corpes Cemetery Roeux France

It would appear that 2nd Lieut James Whittinghame Robertson had been a student at St Andrews University and a cadet of their Officer Training Corps as he is shown on the photograph of St Andrews University OTC Roll of Honour for the Great War 1914 -1919 located at the present Tayforth Universities OTC Headquarters in City Road St Andrews Fife . He was training to be a Minister in the Church of Scotland at Whittinghame in the Lothians under his Uncle but on the outbreak of the Great War he volunteered to serve under the Colours as a Private in the 15th (service )Bn Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and then during January 1917 he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant into the 7th (Fife) Bn Black Watch but on 23 April 1917 he was killed in action at Fampoux , Arras . His younger brother , Lieutenant William Stewart Robetson, MC of the 10th Bn attached 4/5th Bn Black Watch had been killed in action a short time earlier in France ( 3 September 1916 grave Hamel Military Cemetery , Baeumont Hamel France ).

Both brothers 2nd Lieutenant James Whittinghame Robertson , 7th Black Watch and younger brother Lieutenant William Stewart Robertson , 10 Bn Black Watch attach 4/5th Bn Black Watch are listed on the Roll of Honour for St Andrews University Officer Training Corps - City Road St Andrews Fife ( Tayforth Universities OTC Headquarters) and 2nd Lieutenant James Whittinghame Robertson is listed on the war memorial at Whittinghame near Dunbar

Listed on the Probationers & Student of Divinity section is recorded

J. Whittinghame Robertson who it would appear was born in Dundee the son of The Rev Dr David R Robertson & Mrs Robertson , "Elmslea" , 2 Seafield Road, Broughty Ferry Forfarshire . He attended St Andrews University and was a cadet in the St Andrews University Officer Training Corps and just before he completed his University course his younger brother William Stewart Robertson joined the students of the University and became an OTC Cadet . James Whittinghame Robertson went to train as a Minister under his Uncle at Whittinghame in the lothians and on the outbreak of the Great War he volunteered to join the ranks as a private in the 15th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders . He was later commissioned 2nd Lieutenant into the 7th Black Watch during January 1917 but on the 23 April 1917 he was killed in action and he was buried in Brown's Corpes Cemetery Roex , France . He was 29 years of age .

His younger brother , William Stewart Robertson was commissioned from St Andrews University Cadet into the 8th Black Watch then Lieutenant in the 10th Black Watch but whilst being attached to the 4/5 th Bn Black Watch he was killed in action . He is buried at Hamel Military Cemetery , Beaumont Hamel France.

2nd Lieutenant James Whittinghame Robertson is listed also on the Whittinghame War Memorial in the lothians near Dunbar . Also on the St Andrews Uni O TC at their H Q in St Andrews ( now the Tayforth Universities OTC , City Road St Andrews Fife )
