I was in the local library looking at newspapers on microfiche and wanted to take a copy but the print was unreadable. I asked if I could try and take a photograph of the screen and they were happy for me to do so. The following photos were taken with a pocket camera (no flash of course). Surprisingly good result and saved myself a 20p per copy charge as well.

That's come out remarkably well. I'll certainly try that next time I need to check a microfiche record.

Whether you are allowed or not to photograph screen-shots in the library may depend on the local council policy, or possibly on the librarian. I have seen someone threatened with removal from Edinburgh Central Library for photographing rather than taking a print-out on a microfilm (or microfiche?) reader.

However, you may have a decent argument if the print-out is illegible and a legible photograph is possible.

I'll have to try that in future, when it's crappy.
I'm only paying 5p per print out though Laughing

Probably varies according to which library you're in.

I think the Mitchell Library charges a ridiculous amount to print from fiche.

I wouldn't mind paying 20p if the copies were any good, or even paying a small charge to be allowed to photograph. It helps that the papers I were after were well out of copyright.
