I must confess to not knowing much about the Battle of Langside, so I'll point you in the direction of the Wikipedia page, which can be found right here.

The memorial is situated in the middle of a very busy road, and I would suggest you take care when trying to cross to view it - the traffic is not always visible and they don't hang about!

The detail on this memorial is fantastic. Here's a few examples.

This details continues the entire length of the column:

A few more photographs
Location: Battlefield Place at the junctions of Battlefield Road, Langside Road and Algie Street, Glasgow.

The monument commemorates the Battle of Langside, 13th May 1568 in which the forces of Mary Queen of Scots were defeated by those of the Regent, Earl of Moray. Moray's forces were arrayed along the summit of the hill in the area of the Monument and Queen's Park while the Queen's forces attacked up the hill from the area now occupied by the new Victoria Hospital.

The monument was erected in 1887 to mark the 300th centenery of the death of Mary Queen of Scots. It was designed by architect Alexander Skirving who had worked as assistant to the famous Alexander 'Greek' Thomson.

Behind the monument stands the former Langside Hill; Church, also by Alexander Skirving.

The shaft is carved with the Scottish Thistle, English Rose and French Flleur-de-Lys.
