Located in the newer schools assembly hall, beside it is the smaller WW2 wood memorial.
It's large and very dark, so hard to get clear pictures of.

I wonder why Helena Bennet and Capt Hope Hunter were given the honour of having their first names appear and not just initials?

I would imagine Helena's mentioned first would be because she was the only woman?

New forum member Pat Anderson has reminded me that there was an accompanying Oak Case with 5 or 6 additional names of former pupils who had been missed of the memorial.
This is now believed to have been lost in the move to the new school in the mid 1980's, In spite of Mr Andersons appeal for information recently in the local press.

One former pupil on the missing additional memorial was his Uncle, Patrick Wright Anderson.

UKNIWM info:
1925: AN ADDITIONAL MEMORIAL WAS ADDED TO INCLUDE FIVE NAMES OF EX-STUDENTS WHO HAD BEEN OMMITTED IN THE FIRST MEMORIAL, OR WHO HAD DIED OF WOUNDS. IT TOOK THE PLACE OF AN OAK CASE TO ALSO CONTAIN THE ROLL OF HONOUR.

This is a great shame, luckily one name is known. Perhaps the local paper from 1925 would give a mention of the additional memorial and list the other four names?

I'd agree with Anne above that Helena Bennet gets top billing because she is the only woman listed. She is also listed on the Scottish Nurses Memorial in St Giles' Edinburgh.

Regards

Adam

The Arbroath Guide for Saturday , 30 June 1923 :

HIGH SCHOOL WAR MEMORIAL:

On the occasion of the presentation of Prizes at the High School yesterday , when all the pupils were assembled in the hall , the Rector Mr D Drysdale, said that when the school war memorial was first completed , two and a half years ago it was discovered that the names of FIVE of the FORMER PUPILS who had laid down their lives in the Great War had been received too late for inclusion in the list , which was to be inserted on the memorial . AFTER THAT DATE , ANOTHER FORMER PUPIL of the school DIED AS A RESULT OF WOUNDS RECEIVED IN ACTION . The committee who had had the erection of the memorial in hand, had already decided that there should be added to it an oak case to contain the roll of honour , and they agreed that the names of the Six men should be inscribed thereon . That had been done , and the memorial was ready to be unveiled. With the assembly standing Mrs D Littlejohn performed the unveiling ceremony. The names inscribed on the additional section of the Memorial are :-

P. W . ANDERSON ;

D BAXTER ;

D CAIRD ;

C ESPLIN ;

G R MILL

and

J WILSON .

The section takes the form of a tasteful little glass fronted oak case in which the roll of honour will be kept . It was made by W Middleton & Sons , cabinetmakers , Millgate .

.

Having returned home on retirement from the Police I visited the "new" High School at Arbroath and asked the staff where the Roll of honour in the oak case was but they did not know even of its existance so I produced the copy from the Arbroath Guide for Saturday 30 June 1923 . They said that the new school was opened in the mid 1980s and the oak case cabinet with the Roll of Honour inside must not have come to the new school with the Great War war memorial and WW2 memorial .

I wrote to the Director of Education in Forfar and he made an enquiry which came to nothing and implying it was years ago before their time in "office ". I had a Press release to the Courier & Advertiser 17 April 2007 and Arbroath Herald 30 April 2007 but that failed to get any feedback from former teachers or janitors of the old school or new . It would seem that the Oak Cased cabinet may have been left in the old school with the old furniture that would not used in the new High School and the Tayside authority it seems of that time wilfully failed to take care of the cabinet that had been put into the care of the Education Authority .

In my old days as a pupil at the High School , Arbroath the Great War War Memorial and the WW2 war memorial together with the oak case cabinet were located in the main entrance of the High School outside the Rector's office and the School Secretary's Office.

The Arbroath High School was originally located in old High School on Keptie Street, Arbroath (now Angus College ) and it was moved to the new school location on Keptie Road Arbroath when the new purpose built school was built around 1985 .

The Eastern Forfarshire Directory & Arbroath Year Book for 1922 records under the heading " MEMORIALS OF WAR HEROES "

The aftermath of war continues to be seen in many ways , and during the year the number of memorials to those who gave their life in the great conflict have been numerous. In January ( 1921 ) , a mural tablet in the High School , erected to the Memory of the former pupils was unveiled by Lieutenant Colonel T F Dewar in the presence of a large and deeply interested gathering .

A little extra info about Frank Leslie transcribed from The Arbroath Herald/Guide.

His cousin James Leslie in the Royal Scots died 10 days before him in the same area. He is listed on the nearby St Vigeans War Memorial.

Hi there

I've been going through our UKNIWM Scottish records as we upload them onto the public website and I noticed you have this record assigned to UKNIWM 44841. This is a wrong number as this record refers to a roll of honour that was placed in a display cabinet but has been subsequently lost. The correct UKNIWM ref number for the WW1 plaque is 57075.
