Thanks for posting these links. It's a real shame the North Merchiston memorials didn't survive. At least you've got some photographs of them so we know who was commemorated and what they looked like.

Adam,
Agreed, the North Merchiston Church was demolished to build flats and a Health Centre.
A big problem with that memorial is that you have the John Smith syndrome i.e. you can never specifically pin down a lot of the names.
Even St. Michael's and Viewforth have the same problem.
I hate to say it but the further up the social ladder you go the easier it is to identify casualties because of University and Public School Rolls as opposed state schools where memorials were erected but nothing in print.
I have the bones of Boroughmuir High School War Record but no photos of the memorials and as I currently live opposite the school I should do something about it.
We are in the process of moving house so time is at a premium but I will try and photograph the meorials before I move, subject to permission that is.

I’ve just looked up Boroughmuir High School on the web. It turns out they have an internet page about the war memorials:

There are four memorials looked after by the School. Two for the School for both world wars and another two for St Oswald’s in the school annexe. (you have the names for these last two anyway from the Viewforth churches book of remembrance)
There are two options for photographs. You can ask permission to go to the school and photograph the memorials, or perhaps someone from the school can be persuaded to post the images they have already on their webpage.
Do you already have photographs of the St Oswald's memorials through your own research?

I had forgotten Boroughmuir had a site and I'm sure I have some images of St. Oswald's Memorials on a CD somewhere but as previously mentioned they might take a bit of rooting out.

Gordon, congratulations on your work - I got a copy of your War Memorials of St Michaels & North Merchiston from the church which is really excellent.
I noticed that Boroughmuir have changed the page address for their memorial -
As a new member I can't post the correction as a full address but it ends...
