One of my favourite memorials, I use the second pic for my avatar.
I took the photos just after sunset and it gives a nice semi-cameo effect.

The sculptor was Kellock Brown, the same man who did Inveraray, Johnstone and Kilmaurs. The sculpture looks to be identical to Kilmaurs.

I wonder if the Fred m. Sincliar listed on the memorial is this man (assuming the surname is mispelled):
CWGC ENTRY:
Name: SINCLAIR, ALFRED MARRIOTT
Initials: A M
Nationality: Canadian
Rank: Sergeant
Regiment/Service: Canadian Infantry (British Columbia Regiment)
Unit Text: 72nd Bn.
Date of Death: 09/04/1917
Service No: 129389
Additional information: Husband of Elizabeth N. Sinclair, of 158, Queen's Drive, Glasgow.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: 10. A. 14.
Cemetery: CANADIAN CEMETERY No.2, NEUVILLE-ST. VAAST
his Canadian attestation papers can be viewed here and they state that he was born in Penpont:

and the back page:
http://data2.archives.ca/cef/gat2/096687b.gif
He is also mentioned on the family gravestone in Cathcart Cemetery, Glasgow, which can be viewed here (listed near the bottom of the page):

Yes spelling mistake of Sincliar on WM, found this is Alfred Marriott Sinclair, known as Affie, from Canadian Infantry Service No 129389 as you state.
Affie was third son of the late Segt and Mrs Sinclair of Penpont and his oldest brother was CSM F. W. Sinclair Service No 26 of lst/5th Bn. K.O.S.B died 11/11/1915
It is the older brother Fred who is on the WM and not the younger brother Alfred. Do not know where Alfred is perhaps Dumfries!!
Update April 2011 - Found that Alfred and Fred both on WM at St. Johns,Lovers Walk, Dumfries.
Father was Sergeant Instructor Samuel Sinclair 1825-1905, joined 78th Highlanders, the Rosshire Buffs in May 1843, completed 21 years service and retired in 1864. Come to Penpont and was Drill instructor for 4th Company of Penpont Volunteer, for 21 years, retired in 1885 to Dumfries where he died. Buried in Penpont Churchyard. Details of service found in 'Penpont Wm and Parish Memories' - 2nd Edition out in May 2011 by Gladys Cuttle. PM for details.

John McNish is buried in Willesden, London. He enlisted firstly into the Service Corps then into the Labour Corps (army number 302287) on 15 October 1915 age 42, he was a Draper/Packer. Discharged on 17 March 1919 no longer fit for War Service. He had 'malignant disease of the pharynx', i.e. throat cancer. Info from his pension record which is available on Ancestry. He served in France and was awarded the usual 3 war medals (from his medal index card).

Hi Teddy,
All help is gratefully received, thank you. Likewise, I am always happy to help where I can. Now that I have finished my Auchencairn WW1 book (due out in April), I should have some more free time to help others, if asked.

I see there are three men by the name of McAllister listed, can anyone shed any light on whether they are connected to each other?

Yes John, James and William all brothers; John born 4/6/1888 Bankhead, Keir; James born 4/7/1889 same place as brother and William born 26/8/1899 at Auchencrieff Cottage, Dumfries. Father was James McAllister and mother Jane Hope. Father James was ploughman at Beuchan Keir, then moved to Auchencrieff Cottage where he died 19/8/1899 - which was 7 days before birth of his third son.
All three boys on the Penpont WM and John and William on Keir Wm and the roll of honour in Keir.
Bit of mystery with middle son - L/C James Montgomery McAllister, Service No 7114 in 1/5th KOSB died at Columbus Hospsital Chicago on 14/8/1918. Found he enlisted in 1914 and he would have joined the 2/4th KOSB and was posted to the first line for service at Gallipoli. In 1915 he suffered a bullet wound on his left hand, in the Dardanells campaign and went on to develop enteric fever, and later recovered. Seems to have been tranfereed to 1/5th KOSB in 1916 or early 1916 and re-numbered to 200677. Records show he married in 1916 at Barjarg Village Keir and a daugther was born in 1917. He appears to have been discharged in 1917 and then records appear to go missing and unable to find out what happened between 1917 and 1918. (His information from Spoons and Stuart in 2009) In the local paper dated 18/9/1918 find under deaths - McAllister on 14/8/1918 at Columbus Hospital, Chicago, James son of Mrs McAllister, Tibbers, Thornhill.
I found from records regarding Columbus Hospital in 1918 was used as Army hospital and was treating many soldiers for the 'Spanish Flu'. Had not found any details why and how James appears to be in Chicago and no details on wife or child.
The reason why 3 brothers on WM was mother returned to Penpont after her husbands death and she was resident in Penpont when all her sons died; cannot understand why James was not on the Keir WM or roll.
Oldest son John went off to Canada in 1910 and joined Canadian Over-Sea Exp Force on 27/7/1915, single and was killed on 8/10/1916 Service No 153536.
Youngest son - William No 132181 and killed 20/5/1918.
All this information is found in 'History of Penpont WM and Parish Memories' by Gladys Cuttle.
Included on Penpont WM have 9 brothers in total.
