I was looking through a survey of the cemetery at Kirkmaiden Chapel next to St Medan's golf course at Monreith. The chapel is the Maxwell family chapel: it is now in a poor state of repair and is surrounded by a stout metal fence with a padlocked gate. However, the survey, done in the late 70s/early 80s, reports two bronze plaques, one to Aymer Maxwell, which reads: In memory of Aymer Edward Maxwell younger of Monreith Captain Grenadier Guards and Lieutenant Colonel of Royal Naval Division killed in action at Antwerp 8th October 1914 aged 36 years.
As I can't access the chapel I can't verify this (although I have been in there a few years ago - before my interest in war memorials). The other plaque is of General Edward Herbert Maxwell CB. Am I right in thinking that Aymer Maxwell was father of the author, Gavin Maxwell, whose otter memorial is just up the hill from the chapel.
If Mods would prefer I can open a separate thread on the memorials in Kirkmaiden Chapel.
