John, thanks very much for this, if you would be kind enough to forward Mr Johnstone's email address (via PM), i will be glad to write, detailing the memorials with a couple of sample photos and giving a couple of examples of what can be done (both good and bad). I recently visited the old church in Edinburgh where the festival is now organised from (up near the castle) and that has been completely stripped of memorials with obvious repairs where they once were. Does anyone know the name of the church/current name of the building?

Paul

The building in Edinburgh is now called the Hub. I think before it closed it was called the Highland Tollbooth Church. The memorials which were in it are now in Greyfriar's Church not far away.

That's good news. Sometimes Clergy and head teachers can be quite anti-war memorial because of their anti-war beliefs. It's madness because what could be more anti-war than a war memorial full of names!

It is only sometimes though and I'm glad to see it's been rescued here.

Look forward to seeing it. I have the unveiling report from the P.A. to post. The memorial was unveiled on Friday 10th June 1921. It opens...............

BRAVE SONS OF ABERFELDY
UNVEILING OF BREADALBANE ACADEMY WAR MEMORIAL
TOUCHING CEREMONY
RECTOR'S BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE TO FORMER PUPILS

A very impressive ceremony was held in the Breadalbane Academy, last Friday afternoon, when a handsone oak panel with fifty-nine names of former pupils of the school who have fallen in the Great War, was unveiled by Mr James B. Haggart, Eilian Riabhach, in presence of the school pupils and a fairly large gathering of parents and relatives.

Good news Mike, and glad to hear that those involved were helpful - what a difference that makes.

I was just thinking, 59 pupils, that was a lot for the school

Yes, 59 appears a lot. I think the school had a large catchment area, Aberfeldy, Kenmore, Fearnan, Ardeonaig,Acharn, Weem, Dull, Camserney, and probably a few more. I too am keen to see all the names, see if there are any ommissions, and surprises.
Cheers Mike.

Update on a couple of memorials.

Cummertrees has now been well renovated with a grant from the War Memorials Trust and is no longer at risk.

New Galloway WW2 Roll of Honour is situated in New Galloway Town Hall. The future of this building is not secure, especially so following the opening of the Catstrand because it has lost much of its traditional use. Steps are in hand to set up a committee to review its future. It is only 5 miles from me so I will be keeping an eye on what happens to the building and the memorial.

Whilst in Edinburgh yesterday at a meeting of the Regional Volunteers for the War Memorial Trust, we were told about a memorial at risk needing urgent relocation.

The memorial in question is a large plaque, about 1.6 metres high by 1.5 metres wide and commemorates members of the Forresters who died in war. The plaque is in its original position in Perth which was the Forresters (lodge/hall?) but is now a bridal shop. I think the story is that the shop is changing hands and they will remove it one way or another. Local museum, Forresters and British Legion have all been contacted but no suitable alternative location has yet been found.

The War Memorial Trust is pretty sure to come up with a grant of 50% of the cost of relocation but we need somewhere to move it to. Can anyone help or offer any suggestions?

It goes without saying that we do not have this memorial on the forum and I will try and get a picture if I can, although it may not be the best. Anyone near Perth who can get detailed pics? (Just in case it goes into storage etc).

Paul,

This is very interesting. I think it was about two or three years back I found the unveiling report for this memorial in the People's Journal.
I contacted the archivist at the Foresters who got back to me saying that it was probably moved to the Dundee Branch when the Perth one closed.

He said they were in the process of compiling an inventory of WM'sand would get back to me one way or another, needless to say ...........

Give me details and I will get pics - "anyone near Perth" - tut tut Paul Wink

If memory serves it was Hospital Street ?

Paul

Could an appeal be made on the News section of the Foresters Heritage Trust website?

http://www.aoforestersheritage.com/News.html

Ideally it would stay in Perth but I can't see any involvement in Scotland on the Foresters website.

How about a move to Perth's Second World War memorial - Bowerswell House?

What about a request for help to the Black Watch Museum at Balhousie Castle? Though clearly not their direct responsibility they could probably muster the manpower, transport and space needed to take this into safe custody till a suitable home can be found.

I would like to think that a call to Major Ronnie Proctor at Balhousie would elicit the appropriate temporary response, given the Foresters' reaction to their Isle of Wight WW1 memorial (as noted on their website)

January 2009 - Foresters Court WW1 Remembrance Board

A chance conversation has led to the rediscovery of a significant item of local and Foresters’ history on the Isle of Wight. At a display of local transportation history presented by Cowes Heritage in historic Northwood House, FHT Hon Director Roger Logan mentioned to David Jones of Cowes Heritage the intriguing story of a ‘lost’ or at least, unseen for many years, World War One Foresters Cowes Court ‘Foresters Isle’ Remembrance Board. Within days David had located the Board, and provided photos, one of which is, with David’s kind permission, reproduced here.

The Foresters’ Cowes Court (branch) No. 1822 was in the 1890’s and early 1900’s, numerically the largest in the UK, with over 2000 benefit members. In a purpose built meeting hall (1865) in Sun Hill, West Cowes (the present street facade of which has recently been repainted and presents a striking addition to the streetscape) members held their monthly meetings under the guidance of the Court Secretary, John Jolliffe, who held the post from 1865 until his death in 1918. In addition to the male Court, a female members Court ‘Emma Ward’, No. 8422, met here, as did a strong juvenile Court which acted as a feeder to the adult courts.

Not surprisingly, the call to arms in 1914 and subsequent conscription resulted in many Cowes Foresters serving their King and Country in the Great War, some making the ultimate sacrifice. The Board contains the names of 40 members killed. Amongst their surnames are those of long standing Island families.

The future location and, hopefully, display of the board remain to be determined. In the meantime, however trustees are glad to be able to report positively on this poignant survival from the past. We would be delighted to learn of similar discoveries made throughout the UK and indeed beyond. Just e-mail the Trust at enquiries@aoforestersheritage.com Cowes Heritage may be contacted at cowesheritage@onwight.net or davwin@talktalk.net
