A 90th Anniversary Memorial Service will be held (weather permitting) on 1 January 2009 at Midday at the Iolaire Memorial at Holm.

The Stornoway Port Missioner, Finlay Macleod, will lead a service and a psalm will be sung by Torquil Macleod. A wreath will be laid by the Merchant Navy Association at the Memorial and simultaneously a wreath will be laid at sea near the Beasts of Holm by the Lord Lieutenant aboard the Stornoway Lifeboat.

The Service will conclude with a flypast by the Coastguard S&R helicopter.

The alternative venue if the weather is inclement is the Drill Hall, Church Street, Stornoway.

I was delighted to see details of the Iolaire disaster and the New Year's day remembrance service mentioned in yesterday's Sunday Mail.

The Iolaire was a naval yacht and not a 'troopship' as quoted in the brief story carried by the Sunday Mail.

However, I believe that the newspaper hopes to carry a larger article about the events of 1 January 1919 closer to the 90th Anniversary (eg in one of the next two issues). The Daily Mail is to have an article written about the tragedy by John Macleod in an issue around the turn of the year.
