Hello from Canada,
I have been researching my Great-Uncle, Pte James McGENN, 7351
1st Bn, Cameron Highlanders, KIA 5 Nov 1914KIA 5 Nov 1914 in the First Battle of Ypres.

My question is where do I start to find him on a memorial?
He is listed on the Scottish National War Memorial but I was wondering if I could find him on a local memorial as well.
He was born in Girvan, he enlisted in Kilmarnock and was living in Glasgow before he was shipped out.

His name also appears in the Glasgow Evening Times Roll of Honour on 20-Feb-15 (Date of Entry) 3 (Page), but being in Canada, I have not been able to get a copy of the actual entry.

Any suggestions on where and how to start would be greatly appreciated.

Regards from Canada
Very Happy
Georgia

Hi and welcome, there are a couple of members who are more familiar with Glasgow etc and I guess they will be along shortly.

It is always possible that his name was also added to a family gravestone in Scotland, do you know where his parents are buried? If so, it is not a gravestone that we have on the Scottish War Graves Project yet.

Thanks so much for the welcome!
Unfortunately, there is nothing on the parents' gravestone.

Hello Georgia,

Welcome to the forum!

I've surveyed a few of the 'bigger' Glasgow cemeteries but I haven't come across anyone of that name. If the family were from Aryshire, there's more chance he'd be listed on a gravestone there rather than in Glasgow.

There is an option available to you on the Glasgow Roll of Honour though. If you contact the Mitchell Library (in Glasgow) and give them all the information you have, they may be able to either transcribe the actual article or organise a photocopy/photograph of the image. Whether they would charge for this, I don't know.

Have you tired making a request on any of the genealogy web-sites? I know that members from both Talking Scot ( http://www.talkingscot.com/forum/ ) and Rootschat ( http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php ) quite often visit the Mitchell and are quite happy to do look ups. Worth a try?

I'm planning on visiting the Mitchell Library this Friday, give me the details and I'll get the information for you.

I will also check the City of Glasgow Roll of Honour to see if he is on that.

Thank you so much, that is extremely generous of you. I would be happy to pay a fee for expenses if you wish.

The index for the Evening Times Roll of Honour has him listed:
McGENN, James
born: Kilmarnock
Private, Cameron Highlanders
Date of Entry: 20-Feb-15
On Page: 3

Many Thanks,

Georgia

Unfortunately we are still waiting for photographs of the name panels on the Kilmarnock memorial. His name might just be on that.

I looked at that thread. Too bad the photos go to "Mac", just a few before where "McGenn" would be.
He may be there as his parents and the rest of the family lived there.

There's a James McGenn commemorated on the Glasgow & South Western Railway memorial. Here's a link:

Good luck,

If that's your man, then you can see a reasonable closeup of the names on our own thread:

Hi,

Many thanks, that may well be him!

He did not work for the Railway that I know of, but his older brother was a "Railway Pointsman" (as listed in the 1901 census).

I'll have to do some further research on this. He may have followed his older brother to work for the railway.

Cheers!

I see someone beat me to it on the Great War Forum. I was at the Mitchell today.

For anyone interested, here's the piece from the Evening Times:

Kilmarnock Man Killed

Information has been received in Kilmarnock that Private James McGenn of the 1st Cameron Highlanders has been killed in action. He was 27 years of age, was the youngest son of Mr. James McGenn, an employee of the the Kilmarnock Corporation Gasworks, and prior to the war was engaged as an inspector on the local tramway system. He had previously seen service in India and Africa.

Hi David,

I'm sorry that your answer was duplicated. When I posted on the Great War forum and no one was going to the Mitchell, someone suggested that I post here to increase my chances. I never imagined that I would get 2 postings of the information on the same day. Had I know that someone else was looking up the info, I would have told you not to bother. I hope it wasn't too much of an inconvenience for you, my sincere apologies. Embarassed

I believe I have the answer to the Railway Memorial question. I am quite sure that this is my Great-Uncle on the memorial.

From the Glasgow Evening TImes Roll of Honour:

"Kilmarnock Man Killed

Information has been received in Kilmarnock that Private James McGenn of the 1st Cameron Highlanders has been killed in action. He was 27 years of age, was the youngest son of Mr. James McGenn, an employee of the the Kilmarnock Corporation Gasworks, and prior to the war was engaged as an inspector on the local tramway system. He had previously seen service in India and Africa."

Sincere thanks to all who generously helped me,

Georgia
