These photos show the Second World War names. They also show you the images on the four panels around the base, which depict "Sea", "Air" and "Land". I'm not sure what the second batch of names are for. They might be Second World War, or possibly later conflicts. There is actually nothing on the memorial itself to tell you what conflict ANY of the names are from.

Interesting to note it does not have Piper Richardson, VC, Canadians on it as he was born in Bellshill.

Name: RICHARDSON, JAMES CLELLAND
Initials: J C
Nationality: Canadian
Rank: Private (Piper)
Regiment/Service: Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment)
Unit Text: 16th Bn.
Age: 20
Date of Death: 09/10/1916
Service No: 28930
Awards: VC
Additional information: Son of David and Mary Prosser Richardson, of Princess Avenue, Chilliwack, British Columbia. Native of Bellshill, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: III. F. 36.
Cemetery: ADANAC MILITARY CEMETERY, MIRAUMONT
Citation: An extract from "The London Gazette," No. 30967, dated 18th Oct., 1918, records the following:-"For most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty when, prior to attack, he obtained permission from his Commanding Officer to play his company "over the top". As the Company approached the objective, it was held up by very strong wire and came under intense fire, which caused heavy casualties and demoralised the formation for the moment. Realising the situation, Piper Richardson strode up and down outside the wire, playing his pipes with the greatest coolness. The effect was instantaneous. Inspired by his splendid example, the company rushed the wire with such fury and determination that the obstacle was overcome and the position captured. Later, after participating in bombing operations, he was detailed to take back a wounded comrade and prisoners. After proceeding about 200 yards Piper Richardson remembered that he had left his pipes behind. Although strongly urged not to do so, he insisted on returning to recover his pipes. He has never been seen since, and death has been presumed accordingly owing to lapse of time."
He is , however, remembered on Peebles Memorial in the border where he was partly brought up by his Uncle and Aunt.

Malcolm I took a Canadian friend to the Belshill memorial years ago and she was very disappointed to find Richardson missing from the memorial. We did discover he was listed on the Rutherglen memorial though. We also visited John Street School in Bridgeton which he attended but unfortunately there had been a fire in the 60's and his school records were destroyed.
Maybe you could post the above information about Richardson on the Rutherglen memorial as well?

That probably means James Docherty died post war but he isn't on the SNWM database.

Joseph Potsey died in 1945 and is the last of the Second World War names listed.

Name: POTSEY, JOSEPH
Initials: J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Lance Bombardier
Regiment/Service: Royal Artillery
Unit Text: 49 Bty., 48 Lt. A.A. Regt.

Potsey is a Lithuanian name and there were many Lithuanians in Bellshill who worked(or tried to work) in the mines and steelworks before the war.

I took some more images of this memorial at the weekend. There are some close-ups of the Land, Sea and Air panels and also detail of the rear of the statue which I thought was very detailed. There were no obvious names or marks on the base of the statue to indicate where it came from.

Re; the second batch of names on this memorial. One of them is my uncle, William McLoughlin. I believe his name was omitted originally and a member of his family requested it be added and it was some years later. I can only assume it is the same with the others.

His details are as follows:

William McLoughlin, 14282276, 172 Fortress Coy; Royal Engineers.
KIA in Gibralter 21 September 1944.

Buried in Gibralter (North Front) Cemetary

Son of William and Sarah McLoughlin, Bellshill

Some images relating to Thomas Watson, 483 Squadron RAAF, the last name on the WW2 section, he is also apparently commemorated on a plaque in the MacDonald memorial church in Bellshill - will try get a picture of that and start a new thread about it as I dont see it covered.

Sorry for the delay replying, I amended my email address and have been waiting to have my account reactivated (cheers David for sorting it).

Your absolutely right about the squadron, having spent about a week before posting going through loads of 463 Squadron webpages etc I'm not sure why I suddenly got mixed up.

Cheers

Although it was a RAAF Squadron, Watson was in the RAFVR

WATSON, THOMAS NICHOLSON
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Pilot Officer (Air Bomber)
Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
Unit Text: 463 (R.A.A.F.) Sqdn.
Age: 22
Date of Death: 18/12/1944
Service No: 187732
Additional information: Son of David and Mary J. W. Watson, of Bellshill, Lanarkshire.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Note they are all buried in one grave.

This is what the CWGC says about the Cemetery.

Le Gros-Theil is a village and commune about 13 kilometres south-west of Elbeuf, a small town 18 kilometres south-south-west of Rouen. In the western part, some 30 yards west of the chapel which is east of the main path, is the collective grave of five airmen of the Royal Air Force and three airmen of the Royal Australian Air Force.

Hi,
A picture of the collective grave

He wasnt the only Jock in the crew - it consisted of 3 Aussies, an Englishman and 4 Scots - as well as him their was Samuel Easton of Glasgow, Henry Fowler of West Calder, Gordon Abercrombie Centre Frizzell of Galashiels - I had a look before and couldnt see their names on any War Memorials.
