Hi as many of you know I am a prison officer at HMP Edinburgh. At present I am trying to set up a Scottish appeal to supply food and goodie parcels to the soldiers in Afghanistan. Shortly the 2nd Battalion Royal Regiment of Scotland RHF deploy to Helmand Afghanistan along with the Argylls and Black Watch. My intention is to send out goodie parcels to these battalions and to any families with a soldier at a freepost address who contact us through our website. I am working with the Army on this and have the full support of the RHF here in Edinburgh
If you can help or would like to make a donation please log onto our website at
www.freewebs.com/parcels4troops/index.htm
If anyone would like to help PM me here or use the e-mail address on our website parcels4troops @ yahoo.co.uk. If you would like to make a donation please send to HMP Edinburgh 33 Stenhouse Rd Edinburgh EH11 3LN addressed to Officer A Sutherland.
David McNay has agreed to me posting this thread so thank you David for your support
Thanks

No harm in bumping this thread up to the top anyway at this time of year but just to let you know Alasdair has been recognised by the Army in Scotland for all his efforts with parcels4troops. The Sutherland newspaper 'The Northern Times' reported it yesterday.
Scroll honour for army service
Published: 'The Northern Times' 27 November, 2008
http://www.northern-times.co.uk/news/fullstory.php/aid/5117/Scroll_honour_for_army_service.html
A PRISON officer at Saughton Prison, Edinburgh, Alasdair Sutherland, formerly of Woodend, Tongue, has been awarded a prestigious scroll for his "highly meritorious service" to the Army in Scotland.
Alasdair, from 1973-1987 a squaddie in the Royal Corps of Transport, was instrumental in setting up "Parcels4Troops", a charitable organisation dedicated to sending parcels to Scottish troops on active service in Iraq and Afghanistan and which has, over recent years, sent thousands of much appreciated gift parcels to serving soldiers all over the world.
Parcels4Troops has an active web page and, thanks to the efforts of Alasdair and his colleagues, is continuing to expand its activities, most recently by including the popular breakfast cereal Sugar Puffs in its deliveries. Not, perhaps, the first food you would think of to go to battle on, but proving very popular with soldiers abroad.
Alasdair's interest in all things military extends beyond his charitable activities. He is also a Sergeant Instructor with the Lothian and Borders Army Cadet Force and, in 2003, produced "Never More", a meticulously researched book on the war memorials in Tongue, Melness and Skerray which, as well as listing the names of those who fell in the service of their country, also provides full details of their regiments, the theatres of war in which they were active, and the battles in which they met their fate.
He is currently working on a further book along these lines and hopes to have it published within the next year.
Alasdair, whose parents Murdo and Margaret Sutherland now live in Thurso, has already received considerable support from the far north, including £615.13 from Georgeson's Solicitors in Thurso earlier this year. He is particularly appreciative of donations from his native area and would like to thank all those who have supported Parcels4Troops over the years and encourage them to continue.
You can see a photo of Alasdair with the scroll on the newspaper's webpage..
