Folks

I've been thinking about starting a new forum about Scottish Monuments, Memorials and Architectural Sculpture. It's not a rival to the current forums it's just that I've photos of memorials which I can't post on the SWMP forum because they are off-topic and it seems a shame not to be able to post them somewhere.

I really like monumental sculpture and I've a real soft spot for architectural sculpture so it would interest me, but not everyone is here for the sculpture and I'm not going to bother if it's just a forum for one person so I thought I'd sound some other folk out first. I don't intend it being anything more than how we started the Scottish War Memorial Discussion Forum (remember it being called that!) a couple of years ago. It would just be a place to share what we've already got and anything we pick up along the way, it would just be a bit of fun.

There could be quite a lot of overlap between this forum and a monument forum since pretty much all the civic memorials could be covered, but it would not be my intention to post all my civic memorial photos but I would probably post the ones like the Cameronians memorial in Glasgow and then post a link to the war memorial forum.

The things I would hope to see are the interesting war memorials, public sculptures like the Alexander Stoddart ones that are going up thick and fast in Edinburgh. The friezes on the sides of buildings, figurines and carvings above doorways like the "Heave awa' chaps" one on the Royal Mile etc and basically all the things you find on http://www.glasgowsculpture.com/ but extended to all of Scotland.

There's tons of it out there and it catches my eye and it's probably worth sharing. We've already got the Scupltors section on the forum but what we could do is move that sort of stuff over to a dedicated forum and keep the SWMP on-topic.

This is just a thought that has been passing through my mind since I saw the MV [i]Princes Irene /i] memorials in Stranrear and Portpatrick but I haven't given it much more thought until I read about the new statue of James Clerk Maxwell being unveiled in Edinburgh tomorrow (see here http://www.royalsoced.org.uk/maxwell/index.htm) and that prompted me to think about it again.

You never know it might uncover some more war memorials.

Cheers

Adam

I can see me being an occasional contributor, I already have photos of the Titanic memorial in Dumfries, the Burns statue in Dumfries and James Clerk Maxwell memorial from Parton (just down the road from me, where he is buried) all looking for a home.

I can't see myself being involved in this one. The SWMP is my passion and I'll have to get round the graveyards in the fullness of time.
It would be an interesting concept though.

A cold lunchtime meant an hour at the pc instead and I've got this up and running faster than I expected.

If you are interested join in. Like I say it's just a bit of fun and a place for those memorials which are off topic here as well as showing off your favourites from here!

Cheers
