This Memorial is inside Carrongrove House which was built as the Mill Manager's House by Andrew Heiton Junior (1860-62) and sits right at the heart of the now closed down Paper Mill. The building has been Listed Category B (4th May 2006).

It's location is between the villages of Stoneywood and Fankerton, Denny on the B818 Denny to Fintry road.

It's believed that when the Mill is finally demolished, the grounds will be used for housing with Carrongrove House itself retained and converted into flats.

The memorial is possibly Wrought Iron and has proved be be a 'bit difficult' to photograph.

The wording at the top reads: "To the Eternal and Perpetual Glory of the Men from Carrongrove Paper Co. Ltd., who fell in the Great War."

In the local newspapers it's been announced that a house-builder has now bought the site of the paper-mill and are holding a meeting of sorts quite soon to outline their plans for re-development.

Hopefully, I'll be able to go along and make enquiries what's going to happen to the memorial.

Hello Anne,
I introduced myself as a New Oldie on the site yesterday 28th Aug 08, and take this opportunity to doff my hat congratulating you on your excellent research in finding the Denny and Dunipace, Bridge of Allan and Carrongrove Paper Mill War Memorials.

Your achievement in finding the Carrongrove Paper Mill Memorial is outstanding. I would never have thought this possible, especially now that the mill is due to be demolished.

It is very sad the mill and its history has to step aside for moderenization.
Having no doubts you will find the destiny of the memorial, I look forward to future posts on the subject.

Best Regards,

John, nephew of Sgt James Rae.

Hello John,

Welcome to the Forum!

I'm absolutely delighted you've been able to trace your uncle on these memorials - makes it all worthwhile! I wish everyone who visted let us know they've found our efforts of use.

Did you know your uncle is mentioned on a stone in Logie Cemetery?

Have a wee look here: http://scottishwargraves.phpbbweb.com/viewtopic.php?t=242&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=60&mforum=scottishwargraves (Go to page 5 and scroll down)

If the above link doesn't work for any reason, try: http://scottishwargraves.phpbbweb.com/index.php?mforum=scottishwargraves
(Go to Stirlingshire, then look for Logie Cemetery, page 5)

This is the 'sister' forum to this one and where/whenever possible, we try to link between the two sites.

If you'd like a high resolution copy of the photo, get in touch via PM and send me your personal e-mail address.

Hello Anne,
Many thanks for the PM on Carrongrove. I am still amazed how you found this memorial ever exhisted. If you have read my introductory post, then you will understand why I have said that.

Referring to the memorial stones in Logie Cemetery re- James Rae.
The first stone is actually the family grave of my Rae grandparents. I was unaware my uncle's name was on it.
I last visited Logie Cemetery 51 years ago when I attended my grandmother's funeral. We brought her all the way from Edinburgh to Logie. My uncle/s age should have been shown as 27.

The stone directly beneath shows another James Rae, aged 22 years, 2nd Battn Black Watch.
This in fact, is the family grave of my grandfather's eldest brother William Rae and his wife Margaret. I found this info checking thro' the family genealogy.

This would confirm my uncle James Rae and the other James Rae were actually cousins. I will add this valuable information to the family history.

I emphasize, without your help, nothing would ever have been heard of
this.

Best Regards,

John.

Hi John,

Thanks for the info regarding the two James Raes. I've amended each post to indicate that they were cousins.

I've just received an e-mail from a member of another genealogy forum letting me know that Carrongrove is part of the 'Open Doors' scheme so I'll try and pop along and check whether the plaque is still where it was originally and at the same time make some enquiries as to what they intend to do with it while all the work is going on. It's a shame just how many of these types of memorials just vanish without trace.

It's McTaggart & Mickel who have bought the site and I've kept a hold of phone numbers - just in case!! Wink

I didn't know of it's existance till I was photographing plaques in Denny Westpark Church and I was having a blether to some of the church members. Westpark is an amalgamated church and one man in particular knew a fair bit about some of the men listed on their memorials, which memorials came from which church and it was he who mentioned it. The description he gave me turned out to be completely different from how it actually looks, but at least he knew one existed.

I've since checked all the Denny Church Memorials to see if your James is listed but he's not on any of them.

I have sent an e mail to McTaggart and Mickel as of yet no reply received
regarding the future of some items in Carrongrove one of which mentioned by fellow member of the Denny and Dunipace heritage society
is the War Memorial (which I am told is made of bronze)

I would be grateful if someone on this site would contact McTaggart and Mickel and let me know how they get on.

regards

Hello Anne,
My friend John Sherry has been maintaining a regular surveillance on the dismantling of Carrongrove Mill.
He has created an outstanding site of photographs on Flickr regarding this process.
I noticed Carronglen House on his site and I mentioned to him, my uncle's name Sgt James Rae, was inscribed on the war memorial within it.
Since then, he has gone out of his way, getting in touch with McTaggart and Mickel by e mail re the memorial. Up to present time no response has been received from the developers.
He has also discussed the memorial at Denny and Dunipace Heritage Society.
I think it is obvious McTaggart and Mickel don't share our feelings of how important it is, to save such a historical war memorial.
Anne, I am most certain in saying, you are regarded in high esteem on this excellent site, and Iwould ask, don't you think it is about time someone came down hard upon the developers for an explanation as to what is going to become of the war memorial?.
As the memorial is made of bronze, there is great risk of it being stolen and sold for scrap.
Many people nowadays have no respect for items such as this, and if such people were to get their hands on it, I therefore have no hesitation in saying, they would be delighted in making sure the Carrongrove Memorial joins the lost for ever list.

I look forward to your comments regarding this post.

Best Regards,

John.

Hello to all and thank you to John Rae for highlighting this issue

May I please say that I am certain that the developer McTaggart and Mickel are a reputable company and I am also certain that if they are
not aware of the information posted that they will take action to protect
the war memorial may I also mention as a living memory to all concerned
the young giant redwood planted 1998 still on site but totally unmarked

I looked up the developer on the web and sent 2 polite messages to the contacts available if you can assist we would be very grateful

Hi John (Rae),

I haven't been keeping on top of things as much as I would have liked recently due to one thing or another, but I'll rake out the names and phone numbers and see what I can find out.

I was told by a lady working there when the Mill was winding down, that McTaggart & Mickel representatives had assured them that the utmost care would be taken of this memorial and that it would definitely have a place (probably in the foyer of Carronglen House) once the conversion into flats was complete.

I've spoken to John on another site (I presume it's the same John Sherry anyway!!) but it was a genealogy forum. From memory, I think it was a query he had regarding Gartsherrie Churchyard in Coatbridge.

I just hope that with the current recession, this particular housing project isn't shelved, but I would have thought if it wasn't to go ahead, there's plenty of places locally who would give the plaque a good home, but as you said, maybe an elbow in the right direction is needed.

I'll post updates as soon as I can find out what's going on.

Finally got a chance to phone McTaggart & Mickel today and spoke to the Project Surveyor for the Carrongrove site.

The jist of things are as follows:

He is very much aware of the Memorial and knows there is a lot of interest around both it and the site in general.

They are in talks with Historic Scotland regarding keeping a lot of the original features of the house - fireplaces, stairs etc. The plan is that the memorial will stay exactly where it is during renovation but access to the public will not be possible - due to Health & Safety Regulations.

He did say that if someone requested to visit it, perhaps that could be arranged.

I think after having the conversation, that the Memorial isn't going to vanish - it's too 'high profile' for them to slip it away somewhere and hope it gets forgotten about, but I don't think a few reminders every now and again would do any harm.
