EDGERSTON WAR MEMORIAL (O/S NT 684 116)

Situated at the side of the busy A68 as it makes its way south to the Carter Bar (and England), the memorial sits on the opposite side of the road from the church and is easily overlooked.
Sadly, many of the nine names are becoming illegible:

JASPER BRIGGS, Armentiers 1916.
Jasper Briggs – age 29 – Sergeant (16720) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Jasper was a gamekeeper at Lamberton Toll, Mordington, Berwick when he enlisted in December 1914. He landed with his battalion in France in May 1915. He was promoted to Corporal in October and to Sergeant in December 1915 but was killed three months later.
Born 1886 in Edgerston. Son of Matthew James and Elizabeth or Bessie (Cook) Briggs of Edgerston and of Dovesford Cottage, Camptown, Jedburgh. Husband of Margaret Todd Cuthbertson (Munro) Briggs of 47 North Street, Bishopmill, Elgin who he married in 1911 in Newington, Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 12 March 1916 and buried in Rifle House Cemetery, Belgium.

GEORGE BRIGGS, Montauban 1916

George Briggs – age 25 – Private (18036) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
George was a gardener when he enlisted in September 1914. He joined his battalion in France in June 1915.
Born 1891in Edgerston as George King Briggs. Son of Matthew James and Elizabeth or Bessie (Cook) Briggs of Edgerston and of Dovesford Cottage, Camptown, Jedburgh.
Missing in Action on 9 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


ADAM GLENDINNING, El Auien 1917.
Adam Glendinning – age 30 – Private (201190) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Although born in Northumberland, by 1901 Adam, aged 14, was a shepherd with his father in Langholm, Dumfriesshire and by 1911 they were in Southdean, Roxburghshire. Adam was at Fairloans Farm in Oxnam, Roxburghshire when he married in 1913 and he enlisted in the 3/4th KOSB in November 1915. He was posted as Private (8117) to the 1/4th KOSB in Egypt in 1916 and he served in Palestine where he was killed during the crossing of the River Auja.
Born 1887 at Falstone in Bellingham, Northumberland. Son of the late Jane (Turnbull) Glendinning (died 1889) and of Walter Glendinning of Hobkirk Manse Cottage, Bonchester Bridge, Roxburghshire who had married in 1885 in Southdean. Husband of Jane Elliot (Scott) Glendinning of 65 High Street, Jedburgh and of Temple Hall, Bonchester Bridge who he married in 1913 in Oxnam, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 22 December 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Oxnam Parish War Memorial.

WILLIAM B. HALL, Mazingarbe 1917.
Thought to be this man who died in the Mazingarbe area but two years earlier and who is named on the CWGC Register as:
William Ballantyne Hall – age 22 – Private (S/6661) 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
His service record shows that William Baptie Hall was a ploughman when he enlisted in November 1914. He joined his battalion in France in October 1915 but was killed less than three weeks later.
Born 1893 in Roxburgh as William Baptie Hall. Son of the late Betsy (Fair) Hall (died 1898) and of Robert Ballantyne Hall of Browndeanslaws, Oxnam, Roxburghshire. Robert married Margaret Fairbairn in 1900 in Makerstoun Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 20 October 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.


ALEXANDER M. MACNAIR, Festubert 1915.
Alexander MacKenzie MacNair – age 27 – Private (13007) 5th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Alexander has served his apprenticeship in the Royal Bank of Scotland in Jedburgh and was a bank manager with the Union Bank in Vidoria, Saskatchewan when he enlisted, initially at Maple Creek in the Western Cavalry, and then for overseas service at Valcartier Camp, Quebec in September 1914. He sailed with the 5th Battalion from Quebec in October 1914 and they landed in France in February 1915 but Alexander was killed three months later near Festubert.
Born 1888 in Edgerston. Son of Mary (Barrie) MacNair of Camptown, Jedburgh and of Orchard Cottage, Denholm, Roxburghshire, and of John B. MacNair of South Africa, former schoolmaster at Edgerston.
Missing in Action on 24 May 1915 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France.
Also named on the Royal Bank of Canada memorial in Montreal. (The Union and Royal Banks merged in 1925).


ADAM S. TELFER, Galliopli 1915.
Adam Smith Telfer – age 24 – Private (7301) 1/4th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Adam landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1891 at Fairloans in Oxnam, Roxburghshire. Son of William and Agnes (Smith) Telfer of Jerdonfield, of Langhaughwalls, Jedburgh and of Edgerston Tofts.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Oxnam Parish War Memorial.

ANDREW THOMSON, Gallipoli 1915.
Note: Most records spell his name as Thompson.
Andrew Thompson – age 21 – Private (7300) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was a shepherd at Broombaulks Farm, in the employ of F. R. Turner of Upper Nisbet, when he enlisted in late 1914. He was a member of the Edgerston Recreation Club and was well-known in the Upper Jedwater District. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1893 in Southdean, Roxburghshire as Thompson. Son of the late Janet (Cranston) Thompson (died 1899) and of John Brunton Thompson, and step-son of Elizabeth (Stevenson) Thompson of Carter House, Southdean who married John in 1902 in Southdean.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Southdean War Memorial.


HENRY H. TURNER, Lake Doiran 1918.
Note all civil and military record have Henry.
Harry Hollands Turner – age 34 – Private (23446) 8th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
In 1911 Henry, aged 26, was working in the Tailor's department of a shop in Newcastle upon Tyne and was boarding at 158 Monday Street. He was a tailor's cutter and living at Chance Cottage in Bo'ness, West Lothian when he enlisted in December 1915. He was mobilised in April 1916 and joined his battalion in Salonica, northern Greece in October 1916. He was treated for malaria in July 1917 but was able to rejoin his battalion. Henry was wounded on 19 September 1918 and died in the 28th General Hospital three weeks later.
Born 1884 in Edgerston as Henry. Son of the late Henry Hollands Turner (died 1915) and of the late Frances Lumsden (Rutherford) Turner (died 1906) of Edgerston. His next of kin was his sister Hannah Weaver Hollands Turner of Camptown, Jedburgh.
Died of Wounds on 9 October 1918 and buried in Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, Greece.


THOMAS A. YOUNG, Guillemont 1917.
Thomas Adam Young – age 21 – Private (29867) 18th Battalion (4th Glasgow) Highland Light Infantry.
Born 1896 in Gullane, Dirleton, East Lothian. Son of Thomas and Janet (Mabon) Young of Dirleton, East Lothian, of Lower Chatto near Kelso and of Synton Parkhead, Hawick, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 19 August 1917 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Oxnam Parish War Memorial, Roxburghshire together with his brother Robert James Young – age 20 – Private (45276) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers who died on 21 October 1918.
