Clan MacRae Memorial, Battle of Sheriffmuir, 1715
OS Ref: NN 815 018

A very grand memorial erected in 1915 for the Clam MacRae men who fell at the Battle of Sheriffmuir, 1715.

A smaller cairn commemorating the battle was erected at a later date.

It overlooks the site of the battle



Clan MacRea erected two more memorials shortly after this to their sons lost in the Great War.

Clan MacRae Memorial Unveiled


On Saturday afternoon a meeting of the Clan Macrae Society was held at Sheriffmuir to unveil the cairn which was erected in 1915 to commemorate the men of the clan who fell at the Battle of Sheriffmuir in 1715.
The President of the Society,Lt Col John MacRae-Gilstrap of Eilan Donan,Argyllshire was present and gave an address.The clansmen travelled fromEdinburgh,Glasgow and other places in large charabancs.
Mrs MacRae-Gilstrap unveiled the cairn and the Rev JH Cockburn,Dunblane Cathedral, dedicated it.
A pipe major,a sergeant and a contingent of boys from Queen Victoria School attended.The Pipe Major played a lament after the dedication ceremony.
