This is one of my favourite memorials. I like how the style of the base echoes the earlier South African memorial in the town, but it's the figures on this one that I particularly like.

A small word of warning. the first time I visited this memorial there were a couple of unsavoury types using the trees on either side of the memorial garden as a sheltering spot while they drank their cans of cheap lager. They may not have bothered me at all, but I decided not to take that chance.... |

What a cracking memorial.
Anyone any idea of the sculptor? Could it be another Carrick? _________________

David,
I concur with Derek. There's just something about the memorial that draws me in. Mind you they all do I suppose.
regards,
Mark |

Derek the memorial was designed by Sir Robert Lorimer and the sculptor was Pilkington Jackson who was also responsible for the Bruce Equestrian at Bannockburn and the WWII Royal Scots Fusilier in Ayr among other works. The Alloa memorial was unveiled on Sunday 9th September 1924 and a Book of Remembrance was also lodged in the Library.
Unfortunately it looks in the photos like its had a paint job, you can see some of the bronze green patina coming through on the soldier's bayonet, pity they didn't just clean up the bronze as the paint makes it look more like a fibre-glass model. |

The image on here is too small to make out but on examination it appears he might not be. I'll confirm tonight when I can check my original picture. |

I visited this memorial on a crisp Autumn morning and it was too good a chance to pass up getting some more photographs of a stunning memorial.
No undesirables in the bushes this time I'm glad to say, just a local council employee keeping up the well maintained flower beds.

Here are some close ups of the inscription of the rear of the base. I'd be interested to know if the local library still has a copy of the roll of honour.

And here are my images of the name plaques. Unfortunately photobucket has not done them any favours.
I will not add my Second World War panel photograhs because David's are clear in a previous post |
